Chief weapons in his I counter-action were confidence in j gib Emilia. All the bishops of the region were present here while the con secration was recited simultane ously in every church. The Pope himself turned the switch at his residence at Castelgandolfo which illuminated the statue. The purpose of the consecration was stated in the collective pas toral letter written by the Bish- . ops of Emilia-Romagna: “That supernatural help and increased ; Qur Lord may maintain and in _ crease the fervor of faith in good men and re-awaken in the prod igal sons the sincere desire of a return to God.” (Bed VUisL eS % i om Bed Wile* 3r om Redwood Corset & Lingerie Shop 3171 Peachtree Road CE. 3-3847 Atlanta, Ga. The iafoiiv;^ ' es that a Yugoslav I official banned the letter because j it contained “slanders and false allegations on conditions in Yu goslavia”, by implying that religi ous communities were not free to carry on their work. In his letter the Pope recalled that in 1856 the Faith had been threatened in “Hungary and the lands today called Albania, Bul garia, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Rumania.” The faithful had been exhorted at that time, by' Pope Callistus III he noted, to invoke God’s aid against persecution. Pius XII compared the suf ferings of the faithful at that time with the persecution that is now being inflicted on Cath olics. He said: “Today, also, alas, you who dwell in those countries we have mentioned suffer griev ous conditions, along with many' other Catholics of the Oriental j as well as of the Latin Rite, whose boundaries are east of your own, j or north, along the Baltic coast.” He recalled that “more than 10 ye: .s have passed . . . since Christ’s Church was stripped of her rights . . . Pious associations and religious groups were dis solved and scattered, and sheph erds, either hindered from ex ercising their office or forced from their Sees, have been sent into exile, or jailed.” The Pope , stated that his letter was addressed “especially” to three cardinals, among them His Eminence Alosyus C&dinal Ste- pinac, Archbishop of Zagreb, be cause of their outstanding merits and zeal “in defending the Church’s freedom.” The Yugoslav communists re leased Cardinal Stepinac from prison in 1951. He is now intern ed by the Red regime in his na tive village of Krasic. devotion of his people to the Blessed Virgin and to the Sacred Heart. Thus it was that this year he invited all the bishops of Emilia- Romagna to join with him in con secrating the whole region to the Sacred Heart.
