Council, Augusta
Holds Meeting
At St. Mary’s Council of Catho
lic Women meeting, for November
Mrs. J. Lawrence Ward, presi
dent, reminded the members of
the many activities on the coun
cil calendar, which are, the Bish
ops’ Drive for clothing for the
destitute of foreign lands, the
gathering of clothing for the Boy’s
Orphanage' in Washington, Ga.,
and St. Thomas Aquinas School in
Savannah.
Mrs. Ward read a note of thanks
from the Rev. John J. Kennedy
for the spiritual bouquet sent to
him by members of St. Mary’s
parish on his birthday.
Mrs. Rouse, chairman of the At
lanta Cancer Hospital Committee
stated that 128 pads had been
completed during the meeting’s
sewing hour.

Altar Society
Installs Officers
DOUGLAS, Ga.—The St. Pauls
Altar Society met at Mrs. Louise
Deraney’s home Wednesday eve
ning, Nov. 7. The new officers for
1957 were installed and they are:
President, Mrs. Lee Williams;
Vice President, Mrs. James Omea-
ra; Secretary, Mrs. Edward
Smith; Treasurer, Mrs. Louise
Hanna, and Publicity, Mrs. Dan
Stretch. Following the meeting
Mrs. Deraney served a salad plate
with coffee.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Funeral
services for Miss Mary Ellen Gil
looly were held November 10th at
The Cathedral of St. John the
Baptist.
She is survived by one Cousin
Miss Ellen Foughnan.
St. Augustine’s
Altar Society
Meet At Friary
THOMASVILLE, Ga.—The reg
ular monthly meeting of the St.
Augustine’s Altar Society was
held November 5 at the Friary.
Miss Ethel Gonzalez opened the
meeting with a prayer. Seventeen
members were present, the new
members being: Mrs. George E.
Pfister and Mrs. Ruth Jones.
Members of the Home and
School committee were asked to
co-operate in every way possible
in their P.-T.A., program for the
year. Mrs. F. T. Hunter, the pres
ident, spoke on the importance of
voting and urged each member
to take at least one other person
to the polls on November 6. All
members present were placed on
the Christmas party committee,
the party this year will be a par
ish affair, with both children and
adults attending. Mrs. Hunter
plans to attend the National
Council of Catholic Women’s con
vention in Chicago November 7-
10.
Mrs. James F. Evans, who has
recently returned from , Europe,
gave a most interesting talk on
her trip. She described the various
churches and cathedrals she vis
ited, and described in detail A
service she attended at St. Pet
er’s in Rome at which the Holy
Father addressed workers groups
from several countries.
Mite boxes were distributed to
the members and they were asked
to save their loose change in them
and return the boxes at the next
meeting. The money thus collect
ed will go to , the St. Thomas
Home for Boys in Savannah.
The meeting was closed with
prayer by Mrs. Evans and a social
hour followed.

Georgia Delegates Take
Active Part In The
Chicago Convention
CHOCAGO—The Georgia del
egates to the Convention of the
National Council of Catholic
Women in Chicago took an active
part in the convention proceed
ings and participated in its varied
program. The delegation consist
ed of Mrs. Robert E. McCormack,
president of the Diocesan Council;
Mrs. H. S. Buckley, president of

J the Savannah deanery; Mrs. Jos
ephine Rollinson, of St. Vincent’s
Alumnae, Savannah; Miss Ann

ic Club of Business and Profes
sional Women; Mrs. A. D. Cart

cil; Mrs. George Gunning, Notre

Christ the King Parish Council.
Georgia was represented on the
program by two members of the
delegation. Mrs. George Gunning,
past Diocesan president and Dio
cesan chairman of International
Relations, served as recorder for
the Workshop on International
Relations, served as recorder for
the Workshop on International
Relations. Mrs. Gunnings report of
this workshop is the official con
vention report and will be pub
lished in the summary of the con
vention . when it is released to
the national membership. Mrs.
John S. Correll, national vice
chairman of Legislation, patici-
pated in the wokshop on the
Legislation committee. Mrs. Cor
rell is past president of the At
lanta Deanery and is currently
serving as one of the vice presi
dents of the Atlanta League of
Women Voters.
The Diocesan Council Modera
tor, Father John D. Toomey, >as-
tor of St. James Parish, Savan
nah, attended the special session
for Moderators on Friday, Nov
ember 9. Father Toomey also was
a guest at a special luncheon hon
oring Diocesan Moderators given
by the National Board of Direc
tors on the 9th.
Special events in which Geor
gians participated were a lunch
eon of affiliated organizations of
the NCCW within the Baltimore
Province at which Mrs. Robert
McCormack was represented by
Mrs. George Gunning; luncheon
given by national board members
for national chairmen and vice
chairmen, at which Mrs. John -S.
Gorrell was a guest; a breakfast
on November 9th sponsored by
Mrs. Sargent White of Virginia
for all delegates of the Baltimore
Province, at which all delegates
from Georgia were guests, includ
ing Mr. Robert E. McCormack,
husband of the Diocesan presi
dent and a member of the Dio
cesan "Men’s Auxiliary.”
Outstanding NCCW events
given for all delegates of the
convention were the Pageant,
“She Shall be Called Woman,”
presented to 12,000 women in the
name of His Eminence Samuel,
Cardinal Stritch on November
7th, in the Chicago International
Amphitheatre, the banquet in the
ballroom of the Conrad Hilton
Hotel at. which Archbishop Rich
ard J. Cushing was the principal
speaker, and the address of J.
Edgar Hoover, “The Twin Ene
mies of Freedom,” on November
9th.
The members of the Diocesan
Council are waiting with inter
est to hear the reports of the con
vention which will be presented
at various meetings during The
year.
