RECEPTION FOR BISHOP
CHURCH’S FUTURE RESTS OH
BOYS ANO GIRLS OF TODAY
SAVANNAH — “I am of the
firm opinion the future of the
Catholic Church rests on the boys
and girls of today,” the Most
Reverend Thomas J. McDonough,
auxiliary bishop of the Savannah
diocese, told members and guests
of the Armstrong College New
man Club at their annual com
munion breakfast February 24th.
Bishop McDonough said the
church is deeply interested in the
college students “because they
mean the real Catholic action.” He
warned them, however, that often
the more learned a man becomes
the farther away from God he
draws and that they should prac
tice what they believe to combat
this. The critical period, when a
college student questions his be
lief in religion and God, is during
his first semester, Bishop Mc
Donough stated.
The Rev. Thomas Payne, New
man Club chaplain, in introduc
ing the bishop, told the group the
church’s main concern stood with
the college student who has left
home for the first time in his or
her life. He also said that there
are more than 500,000 Catholic
students enrolled in non-Catholic
institutions in the United States
—a number greater than those
enrolled in Catholic institutions.
Other guests were Msgr. An
drew McDonald, chancellor of
Savannah diocese, the Rev. Wil
liam Dowling, assistant pastor,
Blessed Sacrament Church; Hugh
Grady, vice president, Liberty
National Bank and Trust Co.;
Harry Perese, Armstrong faculty
member; Mrs. Essie Jenkins, Mrs.
Minnie Campbell, Mrs. Helen
Meighen, Mrs. J. O. Tegerson Jr.;
Joseph Killorin, and Mrs, Frank
Andrews.
Armstrong alumni present were
Aleda Green, Shelia Grady, Jose
Rourke, Don Fallen, Cris Russell,
Grady Sapp, Carole Hefferman,
and Marjorie Canty.
