This is the thirty-seventh year
of the Catholic Missionary Socie
ty of Georgia. The little society
has witnessed many changes in
those years.
The most important change was
made this year by the decree of
the Holy Father dividing the state
into two dioceses. The diocese
of Atlanta, including the north
ern half of the state, was estab
lished with. Most Reverend Fran
cis E. Hyland as Bishop. The Sav
annah diocese, covering the south
ern half of the state will be pre
sided over by His Excellency the
Most Reverend Archbishop Ger
ald P. O’Hara, with the Most Rev
erend Thomas J. McDonough as
Auxiliai'y Bishop.
We warmly greet Bishop Mc
Donough as our Auxiliary Bishop,
and wish for him many years of-
blessed rule over us. Humbly do
we pledge our devotion and loyal
ty.
The main work of our society is
the distribution of Catholic maga
zines and newspapers to the mis
sion districts of our state. The
mailing report for this year is
1,925.
We are contributors in a small
way to the State Hospital at
Milledgeville, to the Seminarian’s
Fund and to the Infirm Priest’s
Fund. We subscribe to Maryknoll.
Our deceased members are re
membered with a mass at the end
of each meeting. We continue our
affiliation with the Diocesan
Council of Catholic Women. A
considerable sum was added to
the treasury through the disposal
of a handmade centerpiece made
by Mrs. Leonora Cetti.
We take pride in the progress
of our church in Georgia, and
during the year record these ac
complishments:
The Bishop’s Crusade for $1,-
250,000—a marvelous success —
realizing an amount well over the
appeal.
The ordination of five priests
for our state. One of these the
Reverend John Franklin is a na
tive Savannahian. Another, the
Reverend H. J. Wellmeier, is now
serving as assistant in the Ca
thedral.
The opening in September of a
parochial school by Father
Toomey of St. James parish in
southeast Savannah. Later, the
dedication of a new convent home
for the teaching sisters, the Sis
ters of the Immaculate Heart of
Mary.
n-vound broken for a new High
School in Augusta. This will be
co-educational including Boys
High and the Mount St. Joseph
Academy. The teaching will be j
done by the Marist Brothers and
by the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
A new church built at Fleming
Heights, near Augusta, a mission
of Saint Patrick’s Church.
A mission chapel established
near Columbus to be served by
the Salvatorian Fathers.
We extend sincere congratula
tions to Monsignor Andrew J. Mc
Donald on his elevation to the
household of Our Holy Father.
And again our grateful appre
ciation to Monsignor T. James Mc
Namara for his unfailing support
of our society through the an
nual Georgia- Missions collection
in the Cathedral. For you, Mon
signor, and for those who have
helped the missions during these
years, we pray God’s loving care
and blessing.
We wish to thank; these special
friends for help received: The
Ladies Auxiliary to the Ancient
Order of Hibernians, Mrs: Mary
E. O’Connor, Mrs. Kate F.
Semmes, Mr. W. H. Sexton, Mrs.
Loretta Flanagan, Miss Petra
Morton, Mrs. Vane Hester, Mrs.
Lenora Cetti, Miss Regina O’Dris
coll and Miss Katherine Garrigan.
Closing, I repeat the words of
our founder, a plea for the daily
rosary, for frequent Holy Com
munion, for constant invocation of
our patrons Saint Patrick and
Saint Thomas Xavier, and a pray
er for our Holy Father, Pope Pius
XII.
Respectfully submitted,
KATE A. WALSH
