individuals of foreign banks,
companies and organizations,
which have acted as a cover
through which true identity is
hidden. The end result is an an
onymous position in United States
industry.”
ONE POSSIBLE PURPOSE
In the absence of United States
exchange controls, the subcom
mittee was told, it would be pos
sible for the Soviet Union or Red
China to buy into American cor
porations under such circumstanc
es that the owners of the Ameri
can corporation would be unable
to learn the identity of the people
buying the shares.
It would be quite feasible, it
was explained, for Russia or any
Communist country to obtain dol
lars through a Swiss bank and, in
turn, through a dummy buy
shares in an American corpora
tion. Swiss banks, it was brought
out, in many instances have re
fused to divulge the identity of
foreigners investing money in the
United States.
Since many American corpo
rations hold government c o n -
tracts for the manufacture of top-
secret implements, the subcom
mittee expressed the fear that
one of the purposes of the Soviet
government in acquiring partial
or complete ownership of stra
tegic industries, might be to ob
tain classified information.
DISTURBING PATTERN
The subcommittee has been as
sured by the Defense Department
that it inspects the books of cor
porations to determine, among
other things, the opportunity for
foreign control and ownership be
fore it lets defense contracts. If
there is reason to believe that
any officer or member of the
board of directors of a corpora
tion was selected by foreign
shareholders, contracts involving
the manufacture of secret defense
items are withheld.
But the sub-committee is not
satisfied that these precautions
adequately protect classified de
fense information. Even if all
shareholders registered on a cor
porations books are American,
some may be acting as dummies
for foreign owners with subvers
ive designs.
As yet the sub-committee has
merely scratched the surface of
foreign infiltration into American
corporations. But, as one mem
ber of the sub-committee put it,
“already we can see a disturbing
pattern.”
That the Russians are capable
of the utmost in duplicity was
brought out at a hearing of the
subcommittee by a State Depart
ment official. He related how, af
ter the end of the Second World
War, the Russians looted some
$350,000,000 of German bonds.
Since then the State Department
YOU CAN WIN CONVERTS
Winning A Television Star
By REV. JOHN A. O'BRIEN, Ph. D.
(TTniimrgitj of Noire Dame)-—
Do you want to win converts?
Make a week-end retreat and
bring a non-Catholic friend along
as your guest. Let him follow the
regular conferences. They stress
the basic truths of the Christian
faith, and the
i m p ortance of
living an up
right life and of
saving one’s im
mortal soul.
During those
days of prayer,
silence and rec-
o 11 ection, God
will speak to the sincere truth
seeker and help him to find his
way into the one true fold. The
whole atmosphere is conducive
to “putting first things first” and
this means putting one’s salva
tion before all worldly matters.
It was by inviting Jack Owens,
the well-known television star,
to a retreat that Charlie Cornell,
the Andy of the famous radio
team of Amos and Andy, helped
to lead him into the Church. A
convert himself, Charlie sensed
that the retreat would provide
ideal conditions for Jack to make
the important decision.
“As a youngster,” said Jack,
“I attended some of the revival
talks of Billy Sunday and I sort
of hoped that, when I grew up, I
would become a singing evangel
ist. My folks sang in Billy’s choir,
directed by the well-known Hom
er Roderhaver.
“I played the piano and did
some singing. Soon I found my
self the vocalist with Ted Weems
and his orchestra. In 1943 I joined
Don McNeill and his famous
Breakfast Club.
“I’ll always have a warm spot
in my heart for Chicago, for it
was there too that I found Helen,
the lovely Catholic girl who be
came my wife. We were married
at St. Mary of the Lake on North
Sheridan Road. I signed the mar
riage promises and have kept
them faithfully. God blessed us
with four fine children— Mary
Anne, who is now Mrs. John
Stellar and a television star her
self; Jack, Jr., Noel, and Cynthia.
We moved to California in 1936
and finally settled here in Pacific
Palisades.
“One day my old friend and
famous radio star, Charlie Cor-
rell, came to me and said he was
organizing a group of men to
make a week-end retreat in Mali
bu. He said the talks would be
about life, death and the import-

ance of preparing for eternity.
“ ‘Come along, Jack,’ he said.
‘You’ll find it a wonderful ex
perience. You won’t talk for a
couple of days and neither will
anyone talk to you.’ The idea
intrigued me and I went.
“The retreat master was a
Franciscan, Father Hugh Noonan,
who directs that wonderful radio
program, The Hour of St. Fran
cis, heard over some 550 stations
of the Mutual network. His con
ferences were so solid, down-to-
earth, man-to-man talks and stir
red me deeply. They made me
realize that I had been drifting
along, letting my wife and child
ren do all the praying, and that
it was high time for me to get
down on my knees too.'
“I had several private confer
ences with Father Noonan, and I
came to realize that the Catholic
Church was founded directly by
Christ and was alone authorized
by Him to teach all mankind in
His name.
“It was while making the Sta
tions of the Cross that I definite
ly decided to enter the Church
and follow in the footsteps of
Christ. When I got home and told
my family of my decision, my
wife just about collapsed from
happiness and the kids hugged
me.
“ ‘This,’ said my wife, ‘is what
I’ve prayed for nineteen years.’
“ ‘You mean,’ I said, ‘you’ve
prayed for this all these years
without telling me?’
“ ‘Yes,’ she said, ‘I had faith. I
knew some day this would hap
pen.’ Then she choked up and
tears of joy streamed down her
face.
“The next day I went over to
Corpus Christi rectory where
Father Richard Cotter started me
on a course of instruction. Three
months later he gave me my
first Holy Communion, with Hel
en and the kids kneeling at my
side. That was the happiest day
in my life, and I can’t ever suf
ficiently thank Charlie Correll,
Helen, Father Noonan and Father
Cotter for the part they all play
ed in making that day possible
for me.”
