Bishop Waters Celebrates Mass
Marking Feast Of St Benedict

BELMONT — The feast, of St.
Benedict, the Patron of the Bene
dictine Order, was solemnly ob
served at Belme(nt Abbey on
Thursday, March 21st. Solemn
Pontifical Mass was offered in the
Abbey Cathedral at 9:30 A. M.
with Most Reverend Vincent S.
Waters, Bishop of Raleigh as
Celebrant. Very Reverend Father
Henry- OSB, Prior of Belmont
Abbey, was Assistant-Priest and
Reverend Father Denis OSB and
Deacon and Sub‘ ! DeaCon respec
tively. Reverend Father Joseph
and Reverend Father Gregory
CCD Panel Discussion
At Blessed Sacrament
SAVANNAH—A panel discus
sion on Juvenile Delinquency was
held on Monday, March 25, at 8
p.m. in the cafeteria of the Blessed
Sacrament School, Savannah.
Panel members included An
drew J. Ryan, Jr., Solicitor Gen
eral of the Eastern Judicial Cir
cuit, who outlined the situation
today from a law enforcement
point of view; Mrs. Albert J.
Roesel, covering the influence of
environment; Dr. Robert F. Mar
tin, speaking from a psycological
and medical standpoint and Mrs.
Anthony Ingrisano, the responsi
bilities of parents in preventing
juvenile delinquency. M. Jordan
Curran served a moderator of the
panel. A question and answer
period followed the talks of the
four panelists, the whole program
being confined to one hour.
This was the first in a series
of discussions on topics of vital
importance under the sponsor
ship of the Blessed Sacrament
Confraternity of Christian Doc
trine of which Rev. William P.
Dowling is spiritual director. Wil
liam F. Hennessy, Jr. is chairman
of these discussions and Mrs.
William C. Broderick publicity
chairman.
RICHARD REID RECEIVES CITATION
FOR DEVOTION TO GOD AND COUNTRY
NEW YORK, — Richard Reid,
editor of the Catholic News,
newspaper of the Archdiocese of
New York, has been honored here
for “outstanding devotion to God
and country” by a group of Cath
olic city court employees.
Mr. Reid, who is also general
counsel for the Catholic Press As
sociation, was presented an illum
inated citation by the Catholic
Court Attaches Guild at a Com
munion breakfast of the organi
zation.
Principal speaker at the break
fast was Dr. Joseph B. Cavallaro,
chairman of New York City’s
Board of Higher Education, who
urged Catholics to “awaken from
their lethargy.”
War is being waged for the
souls of men,” Dr. Cavallaro said.
“Never has there been a greater
need for faith than today.”
He declared that all Catholics
ought to take an active part in
the lay apostolate.

sung by the Monastic Schola and
all other parts by the entire Mon
astic Community of Belmont Ab
bey. assembled in the sanctuary.
The sermon was delivered by the
Reverend Father Robert OSB,
Chaplain of Sacred Heart Convent
at Belmont, N. C. In his sermon
Father Robert traced the history
and the work of Benedictine Mo-
nasticism down through the cen
turies and emphasized the activi
ties of The Benedictine Monks
here “in our beloved Southland.”
Present for the Mass were prac
tically all the Diocesan Priests
of the Charlotte Deanery, headed
by Rt. Reverend Monsignor Man-
ley and Rt. Reverend Monsignor
Begley. In addition to the secular
priests there were representatives
of the Oratorian Fathers from
Rock Hill, S. C., The Fathers of
Mercy, The Trinitatrian Fathers,
Maryknoll Fathers, and the Fran-
cisan Fathers. One of the largest
Congregations ever to assist at St.
Benedict’s Day celebration was
present in the Cathedral.
After the Mass the Very Rev
erend Father Walter OSB, Vicar-
Coadjutor, of Belmont Abbey was
host to the Most Reverend Bishop
and the visiting Clergy. The din
ner was served in the monastic
dining room and concluded with
the singing of the traditional
Benedictine “Ultima.” At 5:00 P.
M. Solemn Vespers were sung in
the Cathedral with Very Reverend
Father Walters OSB as celebrant.
The recitation of Compline by the
monastic community brought the
day to a close.

St. John’s Civics Club for hand
ling the refreshments.
The Miraculous Medal Novena
is conducted each Wednesday
evening at 8 o’clock, followed by
the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
During Lent there will be Sta
tions of the Cross with Benedic
tion each Friday, evening at 8
o’clock. We should ail make a
special e f fort id • attend these
services.
Confirmation for the children
of the parish will be conferred
by His Excellency, Bishop Hy
land on Thursday, May 9, at 7:30
p.m. Confirmation instruction clas
ses for public school children will
be held each Thursday at 3:30
p. m. in the school.
St. John’s school was closed
from March 12 through the 15th
due to an epidemic of virus.
We are happy to announce that
Eileen Fitzgerald, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald A. Fitz
gerald, came out first in the
spelling bee at Sacred Heart
school, in which a representative
of each of the Catholic schools
in the area participated. Eileen
was the happy recipient of a $25
savings bond. On March 20 she
represented the Catholic schools
in the Journal Spelling Bee.
The Sr. Tri-City Club held a
party in the cafeteria with danc
ing, games, and the showing of
various religious films compris-
in the program. Bill Freeman re
ports that there were more boys
than girls at this last social, so
girls—take a hint! The member
ship is on the increase, so don’t
be left out!
On March 3 the Tri-City Club
acted as host to the various Cath
olic teen-age clubs in Atlanta at
a Sunday evening dance. And
here’s a reminder for all of St.
John’s teen-agers who are still in
high school — there’s a dance
every Sunday evening at 7:45 at
St. John’s for you. Hope you’ll
be there!
A children’s fashion show was
held at the March meeting of the
Ladies’ Guild and needless to say
the children and their outfits
were absolutely adorable.
Mrs. Julia Boyle was chairman
of the covered dish supper held
on March 17. She and her com
mittee did a marvelous job of
serving us a delicious dinner.
Scout troops 641 and 642 are to
be congratulated on the very tas
ty cakes they baked for the din
ner.
Grades 5 and 6 had the honor
of keeping the banner, for Guild
attendance of their mothers for
the month of February. The
March meeting, however, moved
the banner over to 3rd grade, and
are they proud!
On March 10 the Girl Scouts
received Communion in a body as
a part of Scout week. Our troop
also participated in the In
gathering at the Cracker Base
ball Field along with the other
troops in the Atlanta area.

services for Mrs. Raffacia Rayola
were held March 8th at the Bless
ed Sacrament Church.
Survivors are a sister, Mrs.
Catherine Oliva, Brooklyn, N. Y.;
and two brothers, Louis Olivares
and Charles Olivares, also of
Brooklyn.
