Two of Robert Hugh Benson’s
most popular historical novels will
be published editions by P. J.
Kenedy & Sons.on March 21, after
being out of print for almost 10
years. The. price of each will be
$3.50. Benson, born in 1871, was
the son of Edward White Ben
son. Archbishop of Canterbury,
and brother of the noted British
writers, E. F. Benson and A. C.
Benson. After becoming a Cath
olic, he was ordained a priest and
in 1911 was made a monsignor and
a privy chamberlain to Pope Pius
X. The two novels being repub
lished are:
THE KING'S ACHIEVEMENT,
which has as its background a
crucial event in English history,
the dissolution of the monaste
ries under Henry VIII. At the fic
tional level, it is the story of a
house divided in faith and in al
legiance, of the two Tor rid on
brothers sworn to serve different
masters, one ad a monk of Lewes
Priory, the other as an agent of
Thomas Cromwell. Published
I originally in 1904, this novel has
| been newly edited and supplied
by a foreword by Professor Fran-
jcis X. Connolly of Fordham Uni-
| versity.
COME RACK! COME ROPE!
first published in 1912, deals with
the hunted priests of Elizabethan
England and the people who help
ed them. The title derives from
the defiant cry of the Jesuit mar
tyr, Edward Campion, when he
was faced with torture and death.
The central characters are two
young lovers who find fulfillment
in renunciation. The excitement
of the period is portrayed in a
series of adventures — pursuit,
hair-breadth escapes, perfidy and
cruelty offset by loyalty and
courage. Philip Caraman, S.J.,
editor of the London literary peri
odical, “The Month,” has intro
duced and edited this novel in its
new edition.
