ATLANTA—The Scapular Con
gress of the Third Order Secular
of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
held on the grounds of St. John’s
Church, Charleston Heights, S. C.,
March 10, was very successful;
and highly edifying to the two
hundred membdrs and friends
who attended. It was sponsored by
the two Carmelite Third Order
Chapters in the Charleston area:
St. John’s and the Cathedral. Rev.
Father Alex, O. Carm., Provincial
Director, of Chicago, presided, and
was assisted by Mr. John Duffy,
Prior of St. John’s Chapter.
Father Huebec, of St. John’s,
Monsignor Manning, of the Cathe
dral of St. John the Baptist, and
Father Condon, of Sumter, honor
ed the gathering by their presence
and participation.The Diocese of
Atlanta was represented by Mr.
and Mrs. C. D. Carley, Mr. and
Mrs. Grover Heyser, Miss Minnie
Elliott, Secretary, and G. E. Bouli-
neau, Prior of Cathedral of Christ
The King Chapter.
Discussions dealt principally
with Chapter activities and plans,
especially in spreading the prac
tice among all. Catholics of always
wearing the Scapular of Our Lady
of Mount Carmel. It was about the
middle of the thirteenth century
(called by Doctor James J. Walsh
“Greatest of Centuries”) that Our
Lady wearing the Habit of the
Carmelite Order, with the Infant
Jesus in her arms, appeared to
Simon Stock who was then Gen
eral of the Carmelite Order. Tak
ing the Scapular in her right hand
the Blessed Virgin gave it to him,
saying: “Receive, my beloved son,
this Scapular. Whosoever dies
wearing it shall not suffer eternal
fire. It shall be a sign of salvation,
a protection in danger, and a
pledge of peace.” The Carmelites
date the origin of their Order back
nine centuries before the coming
of Christ, when holy men lived on
Mount Carmel and gave them
selves to the work of prayer and
contemplation; the Prophet Elias
was the first superior and is look
ed upon as the Founder. The Third
Order Secular was established by
Simon Stock in response to plea
of St. Joan of Toulouse that lay
men be permitted to join in the
prayers and good works of the
Carmelites yet remain laymen
diligently pursuing ordinary dut
ies of their state of life. It is an
association of the faithful, living
in the world, who, under the di
rection of the Brethren of Our
Lady of Mount Carmel and in
keeping with its spirit strive to
wards Christian perfection accord
ing to a Rule of their own, approv
ed for them by the Holy See. For
the greater Glory of God members
harbour special devotion to the
Blessed Virgin Mary, endeavor to
promote the good of the Church,
and salvation of souls by prayers
and good works, particularly by
encouraging everyone to wear
constantly the Scapular of Our
Lady of Mount Carmel.
Remember it takes just as much
energy to wish as it does to plan.
Too much money in a guy’s
pocket sometimes crowds out the
! common sense in his head.
