Holy Name
Society Meets
HAPEVILLE—St. John’s Holy
Name Society held their regular
monthly meeting in the school
cafeteria April 4th with 19 mem
bers present. Father Daly opened
with prayer. He thanked every
one for their cooperation in the
auto raffle. The profit from this
raffle paid off our debt for ath
letic equipment purchased by the
Holy Name Society for our youth
program, and helped to meet the
payment due on our church and
school.
It was decided to have a con
tinual paper collection and sale;
and request everyone to bring
their papers to the paper storage
house at any time. We get a much
higher price for papers rolled in
approximately 25 pound rolls.
I However, if not convenient to
j roll them in this manner, bring
| them on tied in various size
bundles.
It was decided to give an at-
| tendance prize at this and future
j meetings.
I Initiation for members of the
| new southside council of Knights
| of Columbus has been set for
j May 6th. Application for charter
! has been filed, and we would like
to have several more candidates
for this class. They will be char
ter members of the new council.
Father Drohan gave a talk on
the necessity for habit of prayer
often, and illustrated by telling
the story of the sinking of the
Titanic. He brought out that
many of the passengers did not
believe it would sink until in
vestigation of the damage had
been made by the Captain and
the architect. The architect in
formed the captain the ship would
sink; most of the passengers on
the upper deck were put into life
boats, but passengers in the lower
deck were lost. Several were say
ing the Rosary while the ship was
going under.
We had a very interesting tape
recording explaining the unique
method used to brainwash Ameri
can soldiers captured in World
War II. This data was compiled
by extensive investigations and
study by the U. S. Army Intelli
gence, and was quite different
from the way we imagined it
to be.
Meeting was closed by prayer
by Father Drohan.
Requiem For
Father Cronin
AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Rev.
Daniel Cronin, 80, a Jesuit teach
er who once served in Augusta,
died Wednesday, March 27th, at
a Mobile, Ala., hospital.
A teacher for 63 years, he spent
42 of them at Spring Hill College,
where he taught many Augusta
students.
He retired from active teaching
live years ago and was professor
emeritus of mathematics at the
time of his death. He also con
tinued as faculty moderator of
athletics.
He was a native of County Ker
ry, Ireland, who came to this
country in 1894 and at various
times taught in New Orleans,
Poughkeepsie, N. Y., and Tampa,
Florida.
A practical reason for feasting
on Shrove Tuesday grew out of
the necessity for finishing those
foods which could not be eaten in
Lent—meat, butter, cheese, milk,
fats and bacon—and which in
those B. R. days (before refriger
ation) could not be kept in the
home, even if one were willing to
undergo neighborly suspicion.
