GOVERNOR RECEIVES GIFT GOVERNOR RECEIVES GIFT FROM CHILDREN OF SPAIN ATLANTA,—M o n s ignor Cor nelius L. Maloney, representing the National Catholic Welfare Conference and Bishop Francis E. Hyland, presented to Governor Marvin Griffin a beautiful hand- tooled leather album from the children of Spain. Mr. Miller rep resenting the United States De partment of Agriculture at the presentation which was taped for a news-cast on radio Station WGST. Since October of 1954 one of the major efforts of Catholic Relief Services—N. C. W. C. has been a daily school-feeding program which benefits, .over two million children daily in fifty-two thou sand schools throughout Spain. This program has been made possible through donations of sur plus foods by the United States Department of Agriculture for needy persons overseas and has resulted in one of the most suc cessful person-to-person assistance projects undertaken by our gov ernment through a v o 1 untary agency operating overseas. Under this program, the two million children are receiving a glass of milk and a ration of cheese daily .The preparation of the daily lunch has been made possible with the magnificent co operation of the Spanish National Ministry of Education and school teachers themselves throughout the land. A marked improvement in the health and growth of children has been officially reported—in some areas, the incidence of TB has been reduced as much as 50% —as well as an increased atten dance in schools throughout the land. The children are fully aware of the source of their school lunch, that it is a gift of the people of the United States. In addition to the school-feeding program, another two million in dividuals and families in Spain are assisted with the essential supplement to their deficient diet by means of the surplus foods do nated by the United States De partment of Agriculture through Catholic Relief Services—N. C. W. C. 1 On the second anniversary of the school lunch program the children of Spain, as.-: an expres sion of gratitude for the genero sity of the American people, pre pared this leather bound volume to be presented to the Governor of Georgia as our representative of the people of this State. This handsome volume depicts life in a particular Spanish province. The volume also carries a letter of appreciation from the Spanish Na tional Ministry of Education to the Governor. The album was originally pre sented to Ambassador John Davis Lodge in Madrid by twenty child ren representing the two million children who benefit from the school lunch program each day. Since Catholic Relief Services— N. C. W. C. is the agency admini stering the program in Spain, the volume was consigned to it for presentation to the Governor of Georgia.
