BILLY GRAHAM’S “PARTIAL
GOSPEL” IS “DANGER TO
FAITH ” PRIEST DECLARES
(N.C.W’.C. NEWS SERVICE)
NEW YORK —Billy Graham’s
“crusades are definitely Protes
tant services,” and Catholics who
take part in them are endanger
ing their Faith, a priest has
warned.
The judgment was made by
Father John E. Kelly in an arti
cle entitled “Part Way to God
Via Billy Graham,” appearing in
the May 1 issue of The Homiletic
and Pastoral Review.
The review, a magazine for
priests, is published here. Evan
gelist Graham will begin a cru
sade in Madison Square Garden
here on May 15 that will last at
least six weeks.
Father Kelly, who is director of
the Bureau of Information of the
National Catholic Welfare Con
ference in Washington, D. C.. said
there that the article represents
his personal views only.
Warning that “Billy’s teachings
about the Church are not the
same as Christ’s teachings,” Fa
ther Kelly says this in his article:
“If past performances are an in
dex, there will be some thousands
of Catholics listening to and
with this ordained Baptist min
ister. For. them, and for all Cath
olics who listen to him, Billy is
a danger to the Faith.”
According to Father Kelly,
“the Catholic press. . . has been
generally favorable to Billy Gra
ham.” But he says now is the
“time to be specific,” and he
makes the following points about
Graham:
1. “Rev. Billy Graham is an
ordained Baptist minister.”
2. “Billy’s crusades are defi
nitely Protestant services. . . .
Catholics are not permitted to
participate in Protestant religious
services.”
3. “His published sermons and
books, such as Peace With God,
contain false doctrines. They fall
within the scope of the Index,
and reading them is forbidden
by Canon Law.”
4. “Catholics should not tune
in on Billy’s radio and television
programs, for “even a fairly well
instructed Catholic may be de
ceived.”
Father Kelly notes that Gra
ham “is certainly: a man of
prayer, humble, dedicated, de
vout,” but he says his “studied,
efforts to be interdenominational
... is ... a chief reason why he
is not for Catholics.”
Referring to Graham’s book.
Peace With God, Father Kelly
states that “Billy’s converts are
only half saved” because he
avoids in his book, and in all his
preaching, “controversial subjects
which form part of the deposit
of faith.”
“Frequently in his preaching
and writing,” Father Kelly con
tinues, “it is not always easy to
distinguish between what the
Bible says and what Billy says it
says.”
Graham’s book, Father Kelly
states, holds that a person does
not have to belong to any one
church body to be saved, and
that theological differences in
churches are accidental.
Graham’s book states that once
“you have accepted Christ as your
Savior and put your trust and
confidence in Him, you have al
ready become a member of the
great universal church. You are
a member of the household of
faith,” the priest adds.
Father Kelly concludes: “Cer
tainly Catholic projects for evan
gelizing the unchurched world,
would be much more effective if
they were administered with
even half the efficiency of the
Graham team.
“Catholics, both clerical and,
lay, may well imitate Billy’s ded
ication, zeal and organization in
this preaching of Christianity to
all who fall under the spell of
his partial gospel.
“Most of all, we should all
pray for Billy Graham.”
