My dear Catholic People:
Some years ago effort was made to promote the spiritual
implications inherent in a Catholic concept of Mother’s Day.
Instead of flowers that quickly fade it was suggested that
you present to your mother, whether living or dead, a share
in a Novena of Masses that would be said in every parish and
mission of the Diocese, a gift whose fragrance would ascend
to God Himself, with benefits of grace beyond the possibility
of human imagination.
The offerings which you make for this Novena of Masses
are collected in a special fund which, when sufficient, will
build a chapel somewhere in the Diocese consecrated to the
Most Holy Trinity under the title and patronage of Her who
was the Fairest Daughter of God the Father, the glorious
Mother of His Divine'Son, the Immaculate Spouse of the Holy
Ghost. Such chapels as would thus result from your devotion
and generosity would be a perpetual memorial of your inten
tions, never absent from the Divine Mind but more poignantly
urged each time the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass renews the
plea of Christ’s Blood for mercy and benediction.
Already one chapel notifies to the world Catholic love of
mother. At Toccoa, in the mountains of Northeast Georgia,
your chapel dedicated to the "Mother of Our Divine Saviour”
gives Jesus a home among people who for years had been
denied the consolations of the Real Presence. Since the ecclesi
astical partition of the State, that Chapel is located in the
Diocese of Atlanta. All the money accumulated through the
Mother’s Day cards everywhere in the State since the building
of “Mother of Our Divine Saviour” chapel until November 8t.h
last has been assigned to the Diocese of Savannah and present
ly amounts to $19,712.50. This is not yet enough for a second
edifice. We entertain the hope that as a result of your generosi
ty, next Sunday’s contributions to the Fund for Chapels hon
oring God through the patronage of the Mother of His Divine
Son, in memory and benefit of our mothers, will enable a new
memorial within the year.
Wishing upon you God’s choicest blessings, I am,
Devotedly yours in Christ,
thomas j. McDonough.
Auxiliary Bishop of Savannah.
