FINAL PERFORMANCE OF TEAR
DECATUR—Much new talent
and many of the Theatre Guild’s
old reliables appear in Joseph
Kesselring’s “killing comedy,”
“Arsenic and Old Lace,” being
presented in the St. Thomas
More Social Hall in Decatur, May
24 r 25.
The delightful 3-act comedy set
in an old Victorian mansion in
Brooklyn is woven about the
sweet little old ladies, Abby and
Martha Brewster, played by Ca
role Fessenden and Martha Far-
ran, the 3 Brewster brothers
played by Jim Hicock, Julian Ho
gan and Jack Lovell. Other im
portant roles are filled by Mary
Kreigh, Ed Maurer, Jerry Galli-
gan, Vincent Whibbs, Leo Mues-
sle, Larry La Bonte, and Tom
Cheney.
Abby and Martha have been
having a wonderful time pursuing
their favorite “Charity”, of help
ing” lonely old men, when long-
1 o s t brother Jonathan returns
with Dr. Einstein (the face-mak
er) in tow. Complications ensue,
events happen thick and fast
while Teddy (who would rather
be Teddy Roosevelt than Wash
ington,) practically digs the Pan-
ama Canal.
This is the colsing play of the
current season and will be pre
sented in the popular “(round,
theatre,” under the direction of
Eugene Burgmann. There will ba
evening performances Friday and
Saturday and a matinee Saturday
afternoon. ALL SEATS ARE RE

Letter Of Recognition For Marietta
WASHINGTON, D. C.,—Young
citizens—members of Immaculate
Conception Civics Club of Im
maculate Conception School, Au
gusta, received national honors
this week when the Commission
on American Citizenship of The
Catholic University of America
rated their achievements of the
current school year deserving of
an Honorable Mention citation.
The Commission on American
Citizenship, sponsoring agency,
confers these awards annually in
recognition of the achievement of
outstanding' groups among the
thousands of Catholic Civics
Clubs active in parochial schools
throughout the country. The
Civics Club program aims to pi-o-
mote greater understanding and
appreciation of the principles of
Christian citizenship among the
boys and girls of the upper ele
mentary and high school grades.
The curi-ent year’s study theme,
“It’s Your Government,” encou
raged study of local government.
Monthly articles in the “Young
Catholic Messen g e r,” national
current affairs weekly that co
operates with the Commission in
supplying the study program set
up for the clubs, suggested such
special projects as getting out
the vote. . . visiting the communi
ty governing body. . . learning the
operations and functions, of the
local court. . . and other timely
projects.

Joseph’s School, Marietta, merit
ed a Letter of Recognition.
Diocese Names
Hugh Grady To
Scouting Post
SAVANNAH — Hugh Grady,
well known Catholic leader of
this city has been named Diocesan
Lay Chairman, Boy Scouts of
America, by the Diocese of Sa
vannah.
In addition to the above ap
pointment, Mr. Grady has been
made a Special National Field
Scout Commissioner by the Na
tional Scout Council and a Mem
ber of the National Laymen’s
Committee of the Catholic Com
mittee on Scouting.
Mr. Grady has been a member
of the Executive Board of the
Coastal Empire Council 99 since
1947 and is a foi'mer treasurer of
that organization. He is also in
stitutional repi-esentative of Boy
Scout Troop 15, sponsored by the
Holy Name Society of Sacred
Heart Church.

To Lead Marian
Pilgrimage
CATHOLIC STUDENTS WIN
SCHOLARSHIPS TO COLLEGE
ATLANTA — It was announc
ed here by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Patrick
J. O’Connor, former Director of
the National Shrines of the Im
maculate Conception, that the
Sixth Annual Pilgrimage to the
Marian Shrines will this year
open on August 2nd with Mass at
the Shrine of Our Lady , of Guad
alupe in Mexico and will visit
other Marian Shrines in t h a t
country.
Pilgrims will leave their home
towns in the United States and
Canada on August 1st to join
Msgr. O’Connor and others in
Mexico City for a four-day stay
before visiting' Puebelo, Taxco
and Acapulco. The two-week pil
grimage will end on August 15
after Mass at the Shrine of Our
Lady of Guadalupe.

Conduct Session
ATLANTA—The Second South
eastern Regional Meeting of the
National Conference of Catholic
Charities will be held in Charles
ton, South Carolina from May 12
through May 15th under the pat
ronage of The Most Reverend
John J. Russell, D.D., Bishop of
Charleston.
On Tuesday May 14th Catholic
Social Sex-vices of Atlanta will
present a dramatization of a con
ference between the Administrat
or of a Catholic Welfare Agency
and the Superintendent of an In
stitution in which admittance and
other policies and the exchange
of reports for future planning will
be stressed. Very Reverend Moh-
signor Cornelius L. Maloney, Ph -
D., Diocesan Director of Catholic
Social Services, Diocese of Atlan
ta, will be the chairman and Right
Reverend James J. May, V.G.,
Diocese of Charleston, will pre
side. Discussants for this session
will be Sister Mary Felice, R.S.M.,
Superior of St. Mary’s Home for
Girls, Savannah and Mrs. W. W.
Higgins, Executive Secretary of
Catholic Social Services, Atlan
ta. Also participating will be Mrs,
Malcolm Bryan, vice-president.

The scholarships are among ;
830 awarded by the National
Merit Scholai-ship Coi-p. It is the
largest private scholarship pro-
gram in the nation’s history. More S
than 162,000 students throughout f
the U. S. competed for the scho- f
lastic pi'izes.
Two Catholic students from
Georgia have wotx full foui'-year
scholarships to the college of their
choice.
The two are Michael Smith of
Leo Leonard, a student at the
Prep School at St. Bernard, Ala,,
is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lea
Leonard, Sr. of Columbus. Leo
has been at St. Bernards for his
four years high school. The Prep
School is located on the campus
of: St. Bernard College and is a
college preparatory school ope
rated by the Benedictine Fathers,
Michael Smith, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Walter S. Smith Jr., is a
senior at Aquinas High School.:
He is president of the class of
1957, is editor of the school paper
“Catholite”, is an Eagle Scout,
head of the School Sodality, and
heads the Altar Boy’s Society at
St. Mary’s on the Hill.

Strong” is the theme of the Re
gional Meeting this year. In some
of the other sessions to be held
during the conference, the dis
cussions will concern moral and
medical questions arising in work
with adoptive parents; changing-
services to children needing group
care in institutions; and youth
can contribute to the strengthen
ing' of family life through, per
sonal service.
The Fort Sumpter Hotel,
Charleston, will be the head
quarters for the Regional Meet
ing with Catholic Charities of
Charleston acting as host.
