ANGLICAN PRELATE SCORED
FOR PERSECUTION CHARGE
(N. C. W. C. NEWS SERVICE)
LONDON, — An English Cath
olic weekly has accused the
Anglican Archbishop of Canter
bury of giving' his backing to “the
propaganda lie about persecution
(of Protestants) in Colombia.”
The charge concerning the
Archbishop was made by the
Catholic Times, a weekly publish
ed in London. The paper said it
was “shocked” at a comment
made by the Archbishop, the
Most Rev. Geoffrey Fisher, that
“the small Protestant, commun
ity in Colombia are having a very
beastly time.”
Dr. Fisher’s comment, made as
he landed at London airport on
his return from the World Coun
cil of Churches meeting in New
Haven, Conn., was cited in a news
broadcast by the British Broad
casting Corporation. The Catholic
Times suggested in an editorial
that the Archbishop take a look
at “the oppression of Catholics”
in Northern Ireland before re
peating his statement about
Colombia.
Meanwhile, two other national
ly circulated British Catholic
weeklies issued in London re
ported that Dr. Fisher had a re
straining influence in the World
Council of Churches’ discussion
of the treatment of Protestants
in Spanish-speaking countries.
The Universe said that Dr. Fisher
“led a move which quashed a
series of motions accusing the
Catholic Church of violating re
ligious liberty.” The substitute
resolution he introduced was a
“less offensive” one, it said.
The other weekly, The Tablet,
reported that “the Archbishop of
Canterbury succeeded in substi
tuting for these often truculently
worded resolutions, a moderately
phrased one calling for investi
gation into the condition under
which Protestants live, notably
in Spain and Colombia.”
The Catholic Times, in its edi
torial, said: “We regret having to
deal once more with the propa
ganda lie about persecution in
Colombia. That lie now has the
backing of the Archbishop of
Canterbury, yet he must know
that the lie has been refuted by
Protestants as well as Catholics.”
The paper recalled that a Swiss
Calvinist, Hans U. Bretscher, two
years ago had personally investi
gated the charge that in Colombia
53 Protestants had been martyr
ed, 40 Protestant chapels burned
and 160 Protestant schools closed,
and that he found them untrue.
It said also that Mr. Bretscher
had reported that during a year’s
residence in Colombia he was
never molested or discriminated
against because of his religion.
It concluded by suggesting that
Dr. Fisher himself go to Colombia
and investigate the situation
there. It also said:
“We suggest to the Archbishop
that he look at Ireland and take
note of the different religious
atmosphere of North and South.
We ask him to study Protestant
treatment of Catholics in a land
within his immediate purview
before he talks of alleged perse
cution of Protestants by Cath
olics in remote lands.”
The Catholic Times stated that
while both Protestants and Jews
have held high posts in the pre
dominantly Catholic Irish repub
lic, no Catholic has ever held high
office in Protestant Northern
Ireland. It added that “whole
reams have been written about
the oppression of Catholics” in
Northern Ireland.
