Two Executed in New Terror
Hungarian Reds Give Death
Sentence To Village Priest
VIENNA, (NC) — The Hun
garian communist regime has is
sued a death sentence against a
village priest as part of its new
wave of terror.
News of the death warrant
given Father Laszlo Mindszenli
reached here at the same time as
that of the execution of two more
alleged rebels against the Soviet
imposed government. Father
Mindszenti, who is understood to
be no kin of His Eminence Jozsef
Cardinal Mindszenty, Primate of
Hungary, was doomed after being
charged with hiding weapons and
having been among the leaders
of the revolutionary committee in
Per, a village about 40 miles
northwest of Budapest, during
the Hungarian people’s fight for
freedom last fall.
It was also reported that the
priest’s housekeeper, Anna Spar-
nitz, was sentenced to a five-year
year jail term for allegedly aiding
Father Mindszenti to conceal
arms.
The two men killed for having
played a part in the October-
November uprising were identi
fied as Jozsef Erdesz, 30, and
Zsigmond Sipos, 23.
Meanwhile, Hungary’s com
munist-controlled press has con
tinued trying to heap abuse on
the reputation of Cardinal Minds
zenty, who has been in refuge in
the U. S. legation in Budapest
ever since the might of Soviet
Russia rolled over the freedom
fighters last November 4.
The regime of Premier Janos
Kadar has charged ever since it
gained control that the Cardinal-
Primate was a leader of a fascist
plot against the state. Budapest
Radio, quoting an article in the
Red newspaper, Magyarorszag,
called “Mindszenty’s Priests
Against the People,” has also
linked the Cardinal’s former sec
retary, Father Egon Turcsanyi,,
with this so-called plot.
Father Turcsanyi was arrested
shortly after Soviet intervention
snuffed out the revolt, and it
was announced recently that, he
would be brought to trial.
In quoting from the Magyaro- -
rszag anti-Mindszenty article.
Radio Budapest claimed that
“even his fellow priests regard
Turcsanyi as a well-k n o w n
swindler and a dishonest man.”
It continued:
“When the counterrevolution,
released the Primate last autumn,
Turcsanyi called on him im
mediately, revived old memories
and began active work again. He
aspired to become an undersec
retary of state in a government
headed by Mindszenty.”
“The ways of destiny, however,
are inscrutable. He was not able
to escape to so-called free Europe
because he was arrested at Tokod,
Thus in vain did he carry out,
eagerly and willingly, Mindszen-t
ty’s order on November 3 with
Pal Leszfovszfy, a former Hor-
thyite lieutenant colonel, to lead
a group of people from the basil
ica to the state Office of Church
Affairs to plunder it.
‘One could quote more from
the paper to show Turcsanyi’s
counter-revolutionary activities,
However, even this much might
suffice to show what type of
leaders have those who call the
Hungarian counter-revolution a
war for liberty.”
