Gerald P. O’Hara, Archbishop- bishcp of the Diocese of Savannah.—(Fitz photo). Sunday, November 3rd O'Hara To Dedicate Aquinas High School At Augusta AUGUSTA — The Most Rev. Gerald P. O’Hara, D.D.. J.U.D., Bishop of Savannah and Aposto lic Delegate to Great Britain will dedicate the new Aquinas High School, here, on Sunday, Novem ber 3rd. The Archbishop will be assisted by the Most Rev. Thomas J. McDonough, D.D., J.C.D., Aux iliary Bishop of the Diocese of Savannah. The program scheduled for 1:30 p. m. will commence with the dedication of the school to the patronage of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Following this, the building, chapel, and a crucifix will be blessed by the Arch bishop. The Chapel, newly fur nished, will be used for the first time at the dedication cere monies; the crucifix, a symbol of the students devotion to Christ, will be affixed permanently to the wall of the foyer. Solemn Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament on the cam pus. celebrated by the Archbish op will close the dedication cere monies. The Rev. Peter F. O’Don nell. I Toomey on the Diocesan Council Series Of Clergy Conferences Held During October SAVANNAH — A series of Clergy Conferences has just been completed in all Deaneries of the Savannah Diocese. These meetings presided over by His Excellency The Most Rev. Thom as J. McDonough. D.D., J.C.D.. Auxiliary Bishop of Savannah, will be scheduled at regular in tervals in the future. The Conferences were held at Savannah October 21, with The Rt. Rev. Msgr. T. James Mc Namara, V.F., as moderator; at Augusta, October 22nd with the Very Rev. Daniel J. Bourke, V.F., moderator; at Albany October 24th, with the Very . Rev. Herman J. Deimel, V.F., moderator. Appearing on the programs were the Rev. John. A, Morris who presented a paper on Matri monial procedures and Canon Law; the Rev. Francis J. Donohue ARCHBISHOP TO BE HOME FOR SHORT VISIT SAVANNAH — Word has been received that His Excel lency Archbishop Gerald P. O'Hara will make a short visit to his Diocese. The Archbishop is expected to arrive in Geoi'gia Saturday, October 26th and return to his post as Apostolic Delegate to Great Britain, November 6th. 400 Attend Atlanta Holy Name Rally ATLANTA — On October 13 at 7:00 p. m., His Excellency, Bishop Francis E. Hyland, cele brated an outdoor Mass on the Marist College Campus. This was preceded by a parade of Holy Name men from almost every parish in the Atlanta Diocese. Over 400 people attended the out door Mass and rally. Rt. Rev. Fr. Patrick J. O’Con nor gave a very inspiring sermon on the past, present, and future role that the Holy Name Society has and will play in the protect ing and honoring of the Holy Name of Jesus. The Mass was celebrated on a huge outdoor altar especially pre- the Confraternity of Christian P ale d f° r the occasion. The com bined efforts of many men and parishes went into its building Weltzer. Administrator of St. Patrick’s parish will be deacon and sub-deacon respectively. The Very Rev. Msgr. Andrew J. Mc Donald, J.C.D., S.T.L., Chancellor of the diocese, will be Master of Ceremonies. He will be Assisted by the Rev. John J. Cuddy, Sup erintendent of Schools of the Sav annah Diocese. The Benediction will be sung by the Saint Mary’s Choir. Open house will immediately follow Benediction and members of the P. T. O. will serve refresh ments in the school cafeteria. The purpose of the open house is to ■afford an opportunity to all to view the entire school property -and to see and appraise the mod ern facilities which have been provided for the improved educa tion of the children of Augusta. The Very Rev. Daniel J. Bourke, V.F., pastor of St. Mary’s-on-the-Hill and president of the high school is host for the dedication. He is in charge of all arrangements and is being ably assisted by the Rev. Ralph E. Seikel, moderator of the school. of Catholic Women, Rev. Herbert I anc ^ decorating. J. Wellmeier on Youth Activities, and the Rev. William Coleman on the Legion of Mary. Announce Plans For Pilgrimage SAVANNAH — Plans for a Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes have been announced. Scheduled for late April or early May of 1958, the 17 day air trip will be under the leadership of the Rt. Rev. T. James McNamara, V.F., Rector of the Savannah Cathe dral, and the Very Rev. Daniel J. Bourke, V.F., pastor of St. Mary’s, Augusta. First stop for the pilgrims will be Ireland, with a trip planned to Killarney, Blarney Castle and Dublin. From Ireland the group will fly to London, where they will be welcomed by Archbishop O’Hara. Sightseeing is scheduled for London, also a trip to Canter- berry Cathedral. Moving on to Paris, a stop of several days is planned w i t h tours of Notre Dame and the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal. From Paris, the group will move to the celebrated Shrine at Lourdes, then to Rome, where a stay of from 4 to 5 days is an ticipated. It is hoped that an audience may be obtained with the Holy Father. Leaving Rome, the group will fly to Lisbon and a visit to Fa tima. From Lisbon, the group will fly home. Estimates place the cost of the 17-day trip at between $1,000 and $1,100. First class accommoda tions will be provided throughout the trip. Information and reser vations may be obtained by con tacting either Msgr. McNamara or Father Bourke. Youth Week Plans Announced For Atlanta ATLANTA — Catholic Youth Week will be observed officially for the first time by the Diocese of Atlanta this year. Seven mil lion Catholic teen-agers and young adults throughout the United States will participate in this seventh annual observance. The idea of Catholic Week was conceived by Right Rev. Msgr. Joseph E. Schieder, Youth direc tor of the National Catholic Wel fare Conference, and has been acclaimed by leading figures in the government, the business world as well as the Church for its powerful contribution tc youth. The primary aim of Cath olic Youth Week is to deepen the spiritual life of the youth by leading him closer to God through the Sacraments of the Church and also to underscore the need for well-organized youth pro grams to aid modern youth. The Diocese of Atlanta will ob serve October 27, the opening (Continued on Page Three) Bishop McDonough Dedicates School At Warner Robins WARNER ROBINS—The new $70,000 Sacred Heart Grade school was dedicated September 29th by the Most Rev. Thomas J. Mc Donough, D.D., J.C.D., auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Savan nah. Out-of-town priests who were in attendance included The Very Rev. Msgr. Andrew J. McDonald of Savannah, the Very Rev. Val entine Becker, S.M., of Atlanta the Rev. John Woods of the Air Base, the Rev. John Galvir. S.M.A., Rev. Carmine Benanti S.J., Rev. Lester F. X. Guteri S.J., Rev. Gerald A. Armstrong all of Macon: Rev. N. J. Quinlin of Augusta, Rev. Michael J. Re gan of Atlanta, Rev. John Mc Donough of LaGrange, the Rev Joseph Ware of Milledgeville, and the Rev. John O’Shea of Atlanta. The new school is staffed by the Sisters of the Presentation whose Mother House is in Ireland 7,427 Students Attend Savannah Diocese’s Schools SAVANNAH — 7,427 pupils are enrolled in the 21 elementary and six secondary schools in the Diocese of Savannah. The Superintendent’s office makes the following breakdown on the 7,427 total: Chatham County, kindergarten, wh. 152, col. 22; Grades one to eight, wh. 1930. col. 761; Grades nine to twelve, wh. 489, col. 114. Outside Chatham County: kin dergarten, wh. 258, col. 66, Grades one to eight, wh. 2677, col. 576; Grades nine to twelve, wh. 360, col. 92.
