In 1928, under the ad ministration of Abbot Vincent G. Taylor, O.S.B., the present Abbot- Ordinary, the seminary was clos ed, the college strengthened as a Junior College and a preparatory school, and became a recognized institution of learning in the South. The second Junior College to be accredited in North Caroli na, in 1936 the Abbey developed a reputation in the academic field, in athletics and in the suc cess of its graduates. The administrators of the col lege recognized the trend of edu cation in the post-war years and the necessity of a degree-granting Catholic senior college in the South. A thorough study was un dertaken in 1948 to determine the need, the resources, and the re quirements for the expansion of the college to senior status. The student enrollment had increased rapidly, the demand for full col lege training in a Catholic college on the part of parents, students and alumni brought about im mediate plans for the implemen tation of the study. In 1952, the college announced its actual expansion to a four- year, senior college. Almost im mediately the student enrollment doubled and it was necessary to close the preparatory school (high school) department. In the mean time, an intense program of fac ulty training, introduction of add ed course offerings, utilization of all physical space, was undertak en by the college officials. The completion of the added two years of college work was com pleted in 1954-55. During this same period, the Rt. Rev. Vincent G. Taylor, O. S. B., because of ill health, re quested a Coadjutor to assist him, and retired from active admini strative work in the college, handing over the authority to the Very Rev. Walter A. Coggin, O. S. B., who was chosen Vicar and Coadjutor. Under Father Walter, progress was rapid and every area of the the college was stud ied and strengthened. He estab lished a new administrative struc ture: he became the Chancellor of the college and appointed the Very Rev. Cuthbert E. Allen. O. S. B., as the fourth president of the college. Intensified planning continued, including the physical plant, as well as the curriculum, faculty, and student facilities, all directed toward the earliest ac creditation of the Abbey as a properly recognized senior col lege. Now-, having attained the com plete recognition among colleges and universities, the qualitative growth of the institution will con tinue in order to serve not only the students of the local area, but especially the Catholic young men of the eight dioceses of the South east; I COLLINS MANUFACTURING CO. f ¥ . ^ II Auto Seat Covers — Auto Tops — Upholstering | 517 Spring Si., N.
