Christmas In A Cistercian Monastery (Continued From Page 2-B) of the monks don the blue denim work robe and are soon very busy in the final material pi'epa- rations for the great day. Some will be seen weaving wreathes from the branches of pine trees to decorate various parts of the Monastery, others will be hang ing, them in place, while two or three will be setting up the Christmas tree in the Chapter, attaching to it Christmas cards received by the community, ar tificial snow, tinsel, lights, etc. One of our electricians will be found out in front of the Mona stery proper, installing strings of small multi-colored lights on the trees there and in front of the Monastery Chapel, It is the Chapel, centre of the monastic buildings, to which most attention will be given. Garlands of.-evergreen will be strung in the sanctuary and various parts of the choir brightened by red poinsettias. Of course, the center of attraction in every Church at Christmas time is the Crib, but since the Tabernacle remains the center at all times, it is the cus tom here at Holy Cross Mona stery to erect the Crib directly under the mensa of the High Al tar. As we sing in the “Adeste fide- les”: “Who would not respond with love to one who loves so much?” What human heart is not touched by this astounding condescension on the part of God in becoming a little, helpless babe? Thus the monk, to whom •is assigned the setting up of the Crib, looks upon the task as a great privilege, and with reve rent hands he lays the little fig ure of the Babe in the straw, and those of Mary and Joseph on either side, kneeling in adoration, and thus one by one, the various statues take their place. 'FAMILY CELEBRATION' And so a final sweeping up of loose pine needles and the buff ing of the floor' put a finishing touch to the preparations and all is set for the great Feast, which opens solemnly with the singing of First Vespers at 3:30 p. m. Among other things, the beauti ful words of St. Paul are sung: “The goodness and kindness of God our Savior appeared . . . according to His Mercy He has saved us . . .” Thus is expressed the fulfillment of the Advent longings. Refreshed by a light meal, the community then sings Compline and the daily .“Salve Regina” to Our Lady at 4:30 p. m., retiring to the dormitory at 5:00 p. m., two hours .earlier than usual. The monks rise again at 9:15 p. m., and hasten to the choir in Chapel for the singing of Vigils, which is a very real participation in the singing of the angels, who were heard by the simple shepherds on the first Christmas night: “Glory , to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men of good will.” This ends at about 11:30 p. m., and usually a few carols are sung by a small group of monks in the Sacristy, making it possible for visitors to hear them in the Chapel. Then follows the climax of the entire Christmas celebration. Sur rounded by all his sons in Christ, the Reverend Father Superior sings the Solemn High Mass at midnight. At this “family” cele bration, Christ, represented in a small statue "under the altar, now comes down upon'the altar itself in the tremendous reality of the transubstantiation,;i not wrapped in swaddling clothes but in the pure species oL, bread and . lai,d reverently by the hand of the priest upon the spotless white SMOKE HAV-A-TAMPA CIGARS John J.
