“Never Closer ...
(Continued from Page .1)
evil against Christ’s Church. The
heathens remember their friends.
It is Christ’s people who are to
remember even their enemies
with love and forgiveness. May
the warmth of our charity melt
the springs of human trust and
friendliness frozen so long by
godless materialism.
This thought should be in our
minds at this time. Christ is born
in our flesh for all human kind.
Any surface differences that sep
arate us mean nothing in the pres
ence of that gracious equality
and likeness we all have through
the union in our Lord. May the
lesson of human kindness of God j
Our Savior come home to us this !
year as never before. If it does, j
then there will be peace on earth)
in greater abundance; more and;
more people will be drawn into j
the strong cricle of men of good j
will. This holy peaceful night of j
Christmas will break in a wider
dawn of light and warmth and
happiness for the whole world.
I cannot leave you without;
mentioning prayers for the Aug-I
ust Person of Pope Pius XII. How j
right we are to be proud of him; j
his holiness and wisdom have
fascinated the world. May God.
long spare him to the Church to
continue the brilliant achieve-1
ments of His Pontificate. You.
might like to hear a remark made j
by the Archbishop of Edinburgh,
Scotland, following a Public Re
ception given by the Vice Pro
vost and the Aldermen of Edin
burgh in honor of the Holy Fa
ther’s representative in Great
Britain. I don’t believe that there
was one Catholic amongst the
city aldermen. That night after j
the Reception, Edinburgh Castle j
was flood-lighted for an hour and
a half in honor of the Pope’s rep
resentative. These gracious ges
tures amazed everyone in the city
of John Knox. When I asked the
Archbishop of Edinburgh for the
explanation he replied: “Practic
ally all the Edinburgh City Aider-
men were in the War and, as
members of the Army of Libera
tion, were received in audience
by the Holy Father. They have
never forgotten that moving ex
perience . . .”
With affectionate best wishes
for blessings beyond all counting
[ at this sacred time and always,
\ and begging a remembrance in
your prayers, I remain, dearly
beloved in Our Lord,
Yours very devotedly,
GERALD P. O’HARA.
Archbishop-Bishop of Sav
annah, Apostolic Delegate
in Great Britain.
