Christmas - -1957 (Continued From Page 6-B) Rome’s interest was her empire, her treasury, her temple-gods, her imperial legions. Except for the notation of the census official who casually entered the name “Jesus, son of Joseph” in the le gal records of far off Bethlehem, no justice whatsoever was offi cially taken of the event which made God Himself Brother to man. Years later when Jesus was asked if it be lawful to give tribute to Caesar, he replied, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” Yet when God became man Caesar bad no thing to offer Him. “He came unto his own and his own received him not.” Herod the Great, King of the Jews, had ascended the throne by steps of blood, intrigue, cunning and aid of foreign power. He received the news of Jesus’ birth from the lips of the Magi from the East. His groundless fear of rivalry drove him once again to shed blood. He ordered the male children of Bethlehem and environs of two years and under to be slain by the sword. Christ was born not to take away the perishable kingdom of Herod but to estab lish a heavenly kingdom. The religious leaders of Christ’s time were no better prepared than the civil rulers to receive the peace of Christ because they too were not “men of good will.” The Pharisees strove to adapt the Old Law to the ever changing cir cumstances of life, and in their efforts, substituted formalism for theology as the heart of the spi ritual life of the Jew's. Their materialistic mode of life would recognize no savior who prom ised a kingdom to the poor in spirit, the meek, the clean of heart and to those who would suffer persecution for justice sake. These materialists did not believe in spirits. How could they 'receive the angel’s message, "Peace on earth to men of good will.”? Rich and poor were sharply di vided at the time’ of the Savior’s birth. The hateful, overbearing attitude of the rich evoked dis like and bitterness among the poor. Political authority support ed the rich; the poor could turn only to God for help and ulti mate justice. In defense of the poor the new born Savior chose poverty as His companion on en tering, remaining in, and on leaving the world.
