Christmas - -1957
(Continued From Page 6-B)
Rome’s interest was her empire,
her treasury, her temple-gods, her
imperial legions. Except for the
notation of the census official
who casually entered the name
“Jesus, son of Joseph” in the le
gal records of far off Bethlehem,
no justice whatsoever was offi
cially taken of the event which
made God Himself Brother to
man. Years later when Jesus was
asked if it be lawful to give
tribute to Caesar, he replied,
“Render to Caesar the things that
are Caesar’s and to God the
things that are God’s.” Yet when
God became man Caesar bad no
thing to offer Him.
“He came unto his own and
his own received him not.” Herod
the Great, King of the Jews, had
ascended the throne by steps of
blood, intrigue, cunning and aid
of foreign power. He received the
news of Jesus’ birth from the lips
of the Magi from the East. His
groundless fear of rivalry drove
him once again to shed blood. He
ordered the male children of
Bethlehem and environs of two
years and under to be slain by
the sword. Christ was born not
to take away the perishable
kingdom of Herod but to estab
lish a heavenly kingdom.
The religious leaders of Christ’s
time were no better prepared
than the civil rulers to receive
the peace of Christ because they
too were not “men of good will.”
The Pharisees strove to adapt the
Old Law to the ever changing cir
cumstances of life, and in their
efforts, substituted formalism for
theology as the heart of the spi
ritual life of the Jew's.

The Sadducees, though pre
dominantly the priestly class,
secularized their faith. Their
materialistic mode of life would
recognize no savior who prom
ised a kingdom to the poor in
spirit, the meek, the clean of
heart and to those who would
suffer persecution for justice
sake. These materialists did not
believe in spirits. How could they
'receive the angel’s message,
"Peace on earth to men of good
will.”?
Rich and poor were sharply di
vided at the time’ of the Savior’s
birth. The hateful, overbearing
attitude of the rich evoked dis
like and bitterness among the
poor. Political authority support
ed the rich; the poor could turn
only to God for help and ulti
mate justice. In defense of the
poor the new born Savior chose
poverty as His companion on en
tering, remaining in, and on
leaving the world. The champions
of the existing order would not
