Christmas In A Cistercian Monastery (Continued From Page 4-B) niche in the sanctuary above the Tabernacle, bathed in light. The “Salve Regina” is intoned at this moment and taken up by the voices of all. both choir monks and lay brothers. As the monk looks up out of the surrounding darkness to his Mother and Queen, holding the Light of the world in Her arms, the words of the “Salve” have a much deeper meaning on this blessed night and are sung with greater fervor: “Mother of Mercy . . . show unto us the blessed fruit of Thy Womb, Jesus!” Thus each Christmas is a step ping stone to eternity, and as Mary lifts Jesus up out of the manger and places Him in the heart of the monk, there grows in that heart an ever stronger desire for the full possession of Christ in the everlasting bliss of heaven. Christmas for the monk is CHRIST. The Christmas Crib's History — (Continued From Page 1-B) scenes with more than two hun dred buildings, the most noted of which is an accurately scaled re production of Herod’s temple. A real stream of water runs through the Putz, which rests on fifty bushes of moss. It is annually displayed from December 16 to January 2 in the First Moravian Church there. “We want to live a good Christ ian life not simply for the sake of reward but for God’s glory and for the service of mankind. There is so much revival pressure that we could get the idea that the sawdust trail is more import ant than keeping our eyes foc used on the star that leads to Bethlehem.” — Chrisiian Life Calendar, 1958. Centuries-Old Our Lady of the Star, a beau tiful statue in the Christian Brothers’ Motherhouse, Rome, is a replica of a famous orig inal enshrined in the Abbey of Our Lady of the Star which was founded during the Middle Ages near Cherbourg, France. Tradition says a flaming star fell from heaven on that spot in answer to a monk’s prayer. Christian Brothers are now custodians of the Abbey, and' have revived the old devotion. (NO Photos) 9 X L. E.
