A NEW LOOK AT CHRIST
MAS DECORATIONS, by Sister
M. Gratia Listaite, S.S.C., and
Norbert A. Hildebrand (Bruce,
$4.95).
THE MEANING OF CHRIST
MAS, by A. M. Avril, O. P., trans
lated by S. O. Palleske (Fides,
$2.75).
THE CHRISTIAN LIFE CAL
ENDAR. 1957-1958, by Rev. Gab
riel Ward Hafford and Rev.
George Kolanda (Bruce, $1.00).
“Christmas is often said to be
for children,” the authors of the
beautifully illustrated book on
Christmas decorations begin their
introduction. “It were more truly
said to be for the family. For this
great holiday celebrating the
birth of the Infant Jesus Christ is
also, in a sense, a feast of the
Holy Family . . .” The book de
scribes, in picture and text, typi
cal Christmas decorations from
twenty-seven nations and shows
how they can be made with ordi
nary materials. Sister Gratia, a
Chicago art teacher, and her stu
dents developed the projects out
lined in the book; Mr. Hilde
brand, formerly public relations
director at the Chicago Museum
of Science and Industry, collabo
rated in producing this attractive
volume.
Pere Avril’s book The Meaning
of < nrisimas, originated as ser
mons delivered on the National
French Chain. There is one for
each Sunday from the First Sun
day of Advent to the Sixth Sun
day after Epiphany, inclusive;
and one for each of the great
feasts in the Christmas cycle. In
his preface, the author explains
why he did not “change their
form, although a written text . . .
has demands other than those of
the spoken word, and he hopes
“that others in their turn may be
able to use something from these
simple homilies and adapt them to
new audiences . . .” They are of
fered as sermon suggestions for
busy priests and also for spiritual
reading for all who “are thirsty
for fuller understanding of and
participation in the liturgical life
of the Church.”
Those who have used The Chris
tian Life Calendar other years
will want the new edition. If you
have not used it before, there is
a happy surprise for you if you
get one now. It begins with the
First Sunday of Advent, the be
ginning of the liturgical year, so
it should have been hanging on
your wall before December 1. The
usual useful information is in
cluded for Catholics who wish to
participate in the liturgical cycles
of the Church, as well as the au
thors’ ususal clever comments on
saints and sanctity for each day
of the year.
portant, and is addressed to a
skeptical world.” He presents a
convincing argument in his own
foreword and afterword, as well
as in the ten contributions he has
elicited from ten “serious and tal
ented novelists” who are working
at their crafts here and now.
Among the ten are two Geor
gians: Paul Darcy Boles w T ho
“lives in Atlanta, where he has
taught several courses in the novel
at Georgia State College. His
fifth novel, as yet untitled, is
scheduled for publication in 1958,
and he is currently working on
the sixth”; and Flannery O’Con
nor who “was born in Savannah,
Georgia, in 1925. She was grad
uated from the Georgia State Col
lege for Women, and took her
master’s degree at State Univer
sity of Iowa. She lives near Mil-
ledgeville, Georgia, and is writing
her second novel. Her stories have
been published in many maga
zines, and one of them received
first prize in the O. Henry Memo
rial Award for 1956.”
Miss O’Connor’s contribution is
of particular interest to Bulletin
readers who enjoy and
profit by her book reviews which
appear regularly on this page.
She, says Editor Hicks, “speaks
openly and with feeling about
the relation between her writing
and her religion.” Her essay, the
proposition tnat tne novel is lm- (Continued on Page 16-B)

Our Thoughts of You!
M e finally found the happy words
that will our thoughts convey;
And draw this pie of old St. Nick,
his reindeer and his sleigh.
M e loaded down our Santa Glaus
with words for him to say.
And told him to deliver them
to you on Christmas Day.
Among these words are “Season’s!’ “Yule,’
and oh. there’s “Happy!’ too,
But best of all ice think is this:
“Merry Christmas, Friends, To You!’
