HE WAS UNDER OATH.
The late Prof. Rowland of Johns
Hopkins University was the most emi
nent physicist since the days of Joseph
T. T. STEVENS,
Vice-Chairman Grievance Com
mittee Southern Railway, Ma
con Division, and Prominent
Member Ga. Div. 457, O. R. C.
! Henry, says the New York Globe.
Among his notable achievements in
the realm of pure science was the cal
culation of the mechanical equivalent
of heat and the use of gratings in spec
trum analysis, for which purpose he
devised a machine that could cut 40,-
000 lines to the inch on a plate of
polished metal. In the practical ap
plication of his knowledge he was not
ed as the inventor of the multiplex
telegraph apparatus.
Some years ago, testifying in a case
involving the Cataract Power Com
pany, in answer to a question on cross-
examination at to who, in his
opinion, was the greatest American
scientist, he replied, “I am.”
After leaving the court room one of
the lawyers ventured to criticise this
answer for its effect upon the jury,
whereupon Rowland exclaimed:
"Well, what else could I say?
Wasn’t I under oath?”
“Why, no sir,” answered the boy. "I
thought he was called Old Nick.”
“What! Your husband is dead?”
“Yes, a year ago, and last week I
married again.”
“My sincerest condolence and hearti
est congratulations.”—Fleigende Blaet-
ter.
NOTHING IN A NAME.
President Nicholas Brown, for whom
Brown University was named, was
fond of quizzing small boys, says the
San Francisco Star. One day while
walking in the streets of Providence
he came upon a little fellow who at
tracted his notice.
“How do you do, my boy?” said the
president. “What’s your name?”
“My name is Harry, sir,” replied the
child.
“Harry, is it?” returned President
Brown. "And did you know the evil
one is often called Old Harry?”

“It beats all how prices of every
thing are going up. For years they
have been going up-up-up, and if they
keep on soaring nobody but the
Wright brothers will be able to eat.”
