iLUIIIIIIilllllllillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllinillllJIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIilllii;, November, 1922 THE ATLANTIAN 19 A farmer in the cotton belt had a reputation for never wearing good clothes. His wife was continually re proaching him for his ni\ligence. With the maturing of his crop he journeyed to the city with the “first bale.” The bale brought ten cents per pound more than he had expected and he decided to surprise the “old lady.” He went to a nearby furnishing store and purchased a complete and shining new outfit. Instead of put ting them on in the store he placed them under the wagon seat and began the homeward journey. When about one mile from the farm he stopped by a creek, stepped behind a large clump of shrubbery and pro ceeded to take off his clothes, at the same time throwing them into the creek. They were carried away by the current. Turning to his wagon, naked as Adam, he found that some one had stolen the entire outfit, from shoes to hat. “Giddap, Bill!” said he, jumping into the wagon. “We’ll surprise the old lady anyway!” FRIENDSHIP. It’s the best thing in creation, To have a good friend like you, A friend through all kinds of weather, One that’s a friend clear through, And the best wish that I could make you Is that all your friends may be When tried, as true and loyal As you have been to me. SECRETARIAL WORKS. The story goes that Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin recently met in one of the moving picture studios. Said Charlie: “Mary, I don’t like what you said about me in your book.” “Why, what did I say?” questioned Mary. “Haven’t you read it?” asked Char lie. “Oh, mercy, no,” Mary replied, “I’ve a new play in rehearsal and I haven’t had time. But by the way, somebody told me you panned me in your new book.” “That so?” said Chaplin. “I’ll have to read it and see.”—Japan Advei’- tiser.
