r-- - • ___ ’’ " ' " ' ’ * Experience- H Pike Co., Ala., Dec. 28, 1852. ’i Brother W. L. Beebe: —Thiß is the first time in my life I have < over attempted to write anything ; for publication, and now, my bro ther, I wish you to inspect it, and if it will not do, throw it aside. I will endeavor to give a relation of my experience respecting a change from nature to grace, if so be that I have ever tasted that the Lord is gracious. According to the family record I was born April 17 1822, in Butts County, Ga, and brought into existence iu the or dinary manner of generation, and partook of the nature of the same earthly parentage in which our first parents were created, consequently I was of the earth, earthy, and earthly objects were my delight I cannot say that I had any very early impressions of religious ex ercises on my mind, or at least if I had any they involuntarily wore off. It is true that from time to time I have had serious thoughts concerning death and judgment, and as frequently prom ised to reform my manner of life; yet there were lasting impres sions made upon my mind until about, the age of twenty, when, from the reading of a text of Scrip ture,Rom. X. 13. “For whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved,” from which this question in my mind. Have you ever called on the name o! the Lord? The answer was yes. Then are you saved? the answer was, no Well, then, what is the matter? Why, the suggestion was that I had not called on His name in the right way; and how should I, see ing that I was defiled throughout, and that there was .\no clean spot about me? I therefore resolved nev er to call ou fiis name again, seeing that the Lord was just and holy and I defiled. Thia resolution did not continue long until I was forc ed from the necessity of the case, to say,.“Lord, save,.l perish !”From this I made another jrefolve, that j allowed me to live, for lasFuiatof myself I could do I nothing; yet I felt under the ncc-I essity to beg tor mercy, if it could be givex to such a sinner as me. I continued in this frame of mind for some time, feeling my sins grow heavier upon me, yet they never felt heavy enough, for it seemed to me that I still wished to do something, and consequently Wanted to feel my sins more weighty, though they seamed at times more than I could bear. Suffice it to say that I was brought Jo know, see and feel that I couid not save myself, and that if ever 1 was saved, it must be favor be stowed, without merit on my part hence it was grace; and huw t couid oe possible tor God to save such a ainner as me and remain just was more than I could tell; yet I piean for mercy, if possible. So while in this condition, feeling that I should sink to endless des truction, my burden of guilt was removed, apd I was left in a calm state of feeling, and seemed to re joice for a’few moments, but the suggestion arose, What are you re joicing-about? 1 hardly knew what to say to an inquiry of that kind, and so I concluded that I was mis taken in the matter, and that noth ing Lid happened to me, and that I was worse off than before my burden was gone—my rejoicing was gone, and I was left in an aw ful condition. I therefore prayed to God if I was deceived, to unde ceive me, and that if I had not been convicted for sin, I might be. Yet I never received any other con viiction than that which I bad re ceived concerning my having been brought from nature to grace, if such change has ever taken place; but I have remained in doubts and fears ever since that time, whether I am a changed being or not. But there is one thing that I do not doubt,(that is,) the way and plan of salvation, for I believe that sal tlition is of the Lord, and that it ii by grace that any person is ever , saved, and that if sayed they were previously chosen in Christ before the world was, for tho Scriptures say, “Because ye are sone,” &c. And now to return to the first port of my experience. Ido not wish you to understand me to say that the reading of that portion of Scripture was the thing that quick ened, but that it was evidence that life and hearing were given; for it is the Spirit that quickens, the flesh profit nothing; consequently it is not the reading of the word of God, or the preaching of the gospel that quickens sinners, but it is the Spirit of God that does this, (i. e., quickens,) for the read ing of the word, or the preaching of the gospel is nothing to the unregenerate soul or unbeliever. The Scripture says, “The gospel is the power of God into salvation to every one that believeth”—And moreover, it is a stumbling block to one class and foolishness to an other ; but to the called, both jews and Greeks, it is the power of God and the wisdold of God. So, thm Ido not believe that the preach ing of the gospel is the means of quickening sinners, nor of giving life to the dead, for the Apostles were not commanded to go and make sheep, or quicken sinners, but to preach the gospel. And what was the preaching of the gos pel designed to do? Why, to feed the church of God, which He had purchased with his own blood, for Christ commanded Peter io feed His lambs and His sheep, so also the command to all the minis ters of the cross, is to feed the c.lurch and not to quicken sinners. The proclaiming of the word, or gospel, is one thing, and the gos pel itself is another; but when the thing preached or proclaimed is attended by the Spirit of Gcd and applied to the understanding of the believer, then it is the pow er of God unto salvation to such persons.—l will now close this im perfect scrible, desiring that Gcd aa».y bless you in your labors. Yours in the best of bonds, __ WIVRIGBT Pathway.—Request. Ala., July 9th 1895. Dear Loved Ones; you that read the many precious words written for the Pilgrim’s Banner by the dear saints scattered abroad, with many of whom many of us have met and been made to sit together in heavenly places, mingling our voices together and sharing one another’s jovs and sorrows. It gliddens my poor heart to think wt have such a medium to visit the poor like myself—telling us of God’s goodness howHe basbles;- Hd us and led us to Jesus.,, 0 that I could always have his presence m give me light to see the neeos of God’s little poor ones and the ability to omfort them. There are many poor needy helpless one in the church and out of it, tha:, are always thirsting for gosp; i messages from the ministers of Jesus. These compose the ‘‘Bria* •he Lamb’s wife,’"and Jesus is the best husband the world has ever known O yes, walking as a man known as a man, and no one ever knew him as God only by revela tion . In his wisdom, predestina tion, and foreknowledge he repre sents and makes provisions for his beloved people; and this hr does that all may give to him all the glory, while he gracioush gives them all the benefits. It is certainly his will to do the work-!—to make manifest m time the standing of his chosen in hr wisdom and purpose, with every gift given to them in Christ, em braced in his will and their names recorded in tho Lamb’s book of Life. Ido not think his children would have known how to give him all the glory had he not done the whole work of salvation for them, and brought them to realize it experimentally. Everyone that has been homed again the gift of eternal life, and joyful-* ly renders all the praise to his Holy Name. He has told us “Without me ye can do nothing,” and how sen-1 sibly do we feel it in Without him 0- how dark lifeless we are. Dear saints i fissured that through cor uge in this world life«.#lftW Jesus lived is our hfflty pattet® all things. Andj by keeping J commandments we have that by which we look in to that feet law of liberty, and contmuffi therein, being not forgetfuf* ers, but doers of the word wO be blessed.
