A young man asked an old gentleman for his
daughter's hand, and received his assent to
the marriage on the following conditions: That
he should go into the orchard and gather a cer
tain number of apples, which he could divide so
as to give to the father half the whole number and
half an apple over ; to the mother half of the re
mainder and half an apple over ; to the daughter
half the remainder and half an apple over, and
have one left for himself, without cutting an apple
during the operation. How many did he divide ?

1. A man had a wolf, a goat, and some cab
bages on the bank of a river that he wished to
convey to the other side, but his boat was only
large enough to carry one at a time, besides him
self. He was, therefore, under the necessity of
carrying them over one by one, in such a manner
that the goat could not eat the cabbages, nor the
wolf eat the goat. How did he do it?
2. If three pieces of money are placed on a
table, in a row, how can you take away the piece
■from the centre without touching it ?

A man bought 96 apples at 3 for a cent, and the
same number at 2 for a cent. He sold them again
at the rate of 5 for 2 cents. Did he gain or lose ?

ed one morning by a Shanghai , which was perch
ed on a fence, under my window. From an ad
joining room I heard trails (Wales,) arid I called
a Negro to make a fire, as the air was chilli/,
(Chili.) Going down stairs I found that George
had spilled Greece on the Brussels (carpet,) and
had put on the table a Turkey , seasoned with Cay
enne ; also a Cod; also some Java coffee and a
bottle of Bordeaux —stopped with a Cork —and a
basket containing an Orange, and other fruits. I
gave him a Guinea to pay for my breakfast, and
then went into the kitchen to ask the Cook for
some sugar to feed a Canary, which was. hanging
in my window.
