There was once a vessel at sea, with a crew of thirty men, who, after a long cruise, found that they had only enough provisions to last half their number until they could reach land. It was de cided, therefore, to throw half of the crew over board. The crew consisted of fifteen Yankees and fifteen Turks, and as it was desirable to make at least a show of impartiality in determining who were to be thrown overboard, it was agreed that all of the thirty men should stand in a row, and that every ninth man was to be thrown over, the count to continue until half the number had been disposed of. A cute Yankee so arranged them that every ninth man was a Turk. How did he do it? NO. 203. —SCRIPTURAL ENIGMA.
