8 port's€««. For the Georgia Collegian. A Lament, Suggested by the Death of young “ Willie Mel If son of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Georgia. BY MRS. C. AY. DUBOSE. The wintry sun shines mournfully Where Willie lies a sleeping, And in the home, no more his own, Foml hearts are sadly weeping; The Reaper stern, whose name is Death, Whose greed can know no measure, Breathed on his heart, with icy breath, Then bore away their treasure! Oconee rolls her ceaseless tide, Around his narrow dwelling— Each wavelet in its restless flow, The mournful requiem swelling; The breeze that blows, o’er mountain snows, Sighs out the thrilling numbers, And sadly strews with sheltering leaves, The grass where Willie slumbers. He early sleeps, the well beloved, The young heart, strong and glowing— In all the flush of youthful pride His life pulse ceased its flowing; His lightsome step shall cross no more, The threshold of his dwelling— His feet have reached the other shore, Where Death’s dark, waves are swell ing. Full many hearts shall ache to hear The voice that’s stilled forever— And many eyes shall pine to see, The smile that greets them never! In vain for him, through College halls Shall peal the deep voiced calling— No tone may pierce the silent sod Where morning dews are falling! But still we trust, oh Willie dear! One day again to thee— If in our father’s home above Our ransomed souls may greet thee! Till then, we leave thee to the care Os Him who knows no sleeping— Glad e’en for this—the boy we loved Is in His faithful keeping ! Sparta, Feb. 1870. Not at Home. A gentleman called on a lady one day, and was told by the servant that she was not at home. As he turned to go out, he caught a glimpse of her head in a mirror through a half-open door. An hour after he called on another friend, and found the lady there. “I have just been to your house/' said he, “ but had not the pleasure of seeing you.”— “Indeed 1 I’m so sorry. But I went out in great haste on business.” “In 6uch haste, I presume, that you left your head behind you, for I saw it in the glass.” “ Did you ? It is very possible ; I am so absent-minded.” $. HI.
