For the Georgia Collegian.
Waiting, Broken-Hearted.
INSCRIBED TO MISS .
In every life is a day of woe,
When the skies o’erhead have a fainter
glow,
And the eye looks out from its prison
home
To watch for the shadows that never
come;
And the heart-strings snap with the rush
of grief,
As memory opens each tear-stained leaf:
’Tis the day when the soul, with the last
light fled,
Bends down o’er the grave where its
hopes lie dead.
There’s a sound which stirs through the
pulsing breast,
As the low, deep moan of the sea’s un
rest,
As the last strange cry of the frightened
deer
When it feels the thrust of the hunts
man’s spear;
A sound that breaks upon the startled air
In the wild, sad notes of a soul’s despair:
’Tis the young Love’s sigh when the
withering word—
From the mouth of the faithless, first is
heard.
There’s a tear that falls on the flowers of
youth—
Like the drops distilled from the ser
pent’s tooth ;
As the briny stream from the salt-bed’s
source,
It marks its way with a whitening course.
A withering drop—with a .world of woe
Compressed in the midst of its lustrous
glow: i
’Tis the t/ear that is shed o’er the heart’s

The sigh and the tear in your day of woe
Have chased, fair Lady, the light from
your brow;
You may wait and watch through the
. fleeting years,
in a long life-battle with hopes and fears;
May long for the glance of a splendid
eye,
The thrill of a touch, as in days gone by;
But the record you’ll leave of your earth
ly part,
Is the sigh and tear of a Broken Heart!
Ad VENA.
