8 I Dreamed. Flowers were blooming round, and naught But things of beauty met the eyes; Nature it seemed this spot had sought, And lavished there its thousand dyes. I heard a loved voice whisper in mine ear, , I trembled as it told me I was dear— Trusting, I woke—’Twas but a dream. Proudly I paced an Ancient Hall, While thoughts of valiant glory hung Arouud my soul, to memory’s call Again the shout of victory rung, Again I saw my fathers proudly fling The gauntlet down, while bards their praises sing— Proudly, I woke—Lo! ’twas a dream. I flew to Italy’s bright land, Humbly I knelt before the shrine Where gloriously that classic band Their wreaths of fadeless Laurel twined. Poets and Painters, Warriors, all whose fame • Adds to the lustre of their country’s name— Adoring—l woke me trom a dream. The wintry blasts, now whistled shrill Through leafless trees, o’er snow clad earth, Yet merry we, as if no chill Had bound us to the homestead hearth, We daneed the gladsome reel, or stories told • Os Ladies fair as noon and Knights as bold— Listening—l woke me from a dream. Then dream my soul dream on, Life’s but a dream, that lover’s vow, Ancestral Hall, Italia's Band are gone— And memory’s long vista how Gives but a shaded picture of that band Who danced the gladsome reel—’neath winter’s hand— Then (lream ou m y sou i ) d rearn on . * Zella. Curiosities of Fashion, It is a question, I think, whether the fashion influences the age, or the ago moulds and shapes the fashion, but it is obvious tbat there exists a subtle relationship between them.— A high-bred courtesy, a certain eles vation of manner, a loftiness of lan guage, and even a refinement of thought, seem naturally to associate themselves with the rich and stately costume of the men of the sixteenth century. Look at the cavaliers in the glorious pictures of Vandyck; who can believe that from the lips of such and be-plumed gen tlemen ever dropped any coarse ri baldry or vulgar slang. Those grave and potent seignors who glow on the splendid canvas of Titian ; can you believe them capable of the deeds in’ which delighted in the buckskin breeches and cocked hats of our Mai caronis and Mohawks is the days of 1 the second George? When 1 look upon the sweet and noble women of Vandyck, and compare them with the bare'-bosomed beauties of Lely, I trace in the distinction of costume and fashion the difference of morals and taste, and the wide gulf between the pure household life of the reign of Charles 1., and the social abandon ment of that of Charles 11. Motals and mariners keep pace with the changes of costume, and are indica ted by them. —London Society. THE GEORGIA COLLEGIAN. Students, do not pass by our advertising columns.
