SOUTHERN OUTDOORS, JUNE 1, 1946

COLUMBIA, S. C.—The planned erection of a $12,000,000 pulp
mill on the Santee-Cooper was halted last winter, due partly to
the efforts of the Richland county chapter of the Izaak Walton
League and the Sumter County Game and Fish Association, the
most active conservation group in the state.
At last reports the mill was planning to locate on the lower
Savannah river but in case it or any other pulp mill starts to
build on the Santee-Cooper, conservationists of South Carolina are
ready.
The present anti-pollution laws are totally inadequate to control
pollution, providing only for fines after pollution has actually taken
place. But conservation-minded attorneys are ready to open a court
fight against any mill that might endanger the Santee-Cooper, and
they are prepared to carry the case all the way to the state supreme
court.
Big Bass in Richland County
Richland county is usually thought of as the site of the state
capital but it also produces some mighty nice bass.
Already in the Columbia Record fish contest there have been
three bass from Richland county entered that weighed over Id
pounds, the largest scaling 11 pounds, 14 ounces, and being the
biggest fish entered to date.
Other leaders in the contest include a bream of one pound,
eight ounces, and a crappie that weighed three pounds, seven ounces.
The bream was caught on the Edisto and the crappie on the Santee-
Cooper.
Spinnered Sponge Stalks Sunfish
South Carolina fishermen are having their best luck this summer
on a combination flyrod lure that was probably discovered by some
one who didn’t know any better.
They use a sponge rubber cricket with white rubber legs that
ordinarily is used as a surface bait. But the successful fishermen
fish it differently, putting either a double or single spinner in
front. The lure is allowed to sink and then retrieved with a
twitching movement that is deadly for bream, bass and redbreast.
Palmetto Pick-ups
Alvin Fagin, 11-year-old Greenwood fisherman, landed a 42-inch
garfish weighing 7% pounds recently in Lake Greenwood, better
known as Buzzard Roost. After Alvin had hooked the fish it flipped
into the boat, but as it went back over the side Alvin hit it with
a paddle and then hauled it back in.
A number of conservation groups over the state are reorganizing
after being inactive during the war and several of them are con
sidering seeking membership in the Izaak Walton League. Among
counties holding reorganization meetings recently were Orangeburg,
Chesterfield and Greenwood.
CARROLL LEADERS—Sportsmen of Carroll County (Geor
gia) have organized to restore their depleted game and fish sup
ply. Officers of the club, seated in top photo, are W. F. Gunn,
Carrollton, president; Dillard Wood, Bowden, secretary-treasurer;
and Herschel Reid, Villa Rica, vice-president. Talking wildlife
with them at the organizational meeting are Judge Sam Boykin
and M. C. Roop. Bottom photo shows Mr. Roop’s clubhouse and
part of his lake where the club laid its conservation plans.

CARROLLTON, Ga.—Hunt
ers, fishermen and farmers of
Carroll county have had
enough bad days in the fields
and on the streams. They de
cided this long ago, but not
until last week did they do
anything about it.
Inspired by Dean W. F.
Gunn, of West Georgia Col
lege, they called a meeting at
M. C. Roop’s beautiful club
house near here and at the
finish of a fish dinner they
had elected officers and made
tentative plans to go “all-out”
for a county-wide program of
restoration and protection.
Dean Gunn was elected presi
dent by a group of 45 charter
members. Herschel Reid, of Villa
Rica, was chosen vice-president,
and Dillard Wood, of Bowden, sec
retary-treasurer. Committees were
appointed and they were asked to
be prepared to make reports at a
second meeting June 20.
Does YOUR Dog

The club hopes to enlist mem
bers from every section of the
county and a vigorous campaign
is expected to have the “whole
population” of Carroll county
working for quail and game fish.
Principal speaker at the first
meeting was Charlie Elliott, di
rector of the Georgia Game and
Fish Commission. Elliott said that
he had never seen a “more en
thusiastic and determined group”
than the Carroll outdoorsmen. He
predicted they would attain their
goal.
Much of the early success of the
club is due to the work of County
Agent John Mauldin and Wildlife
Ranger W. R. Perkins. A mem
bership of 1,000 is sought before
the end of this year.

kind of meat with fins, skin or

“Where do they go?” I asked.
“Many of the fish camps which
sell catfish dinners use them,” he
said. “I’ve carried a number of
my customers out to such a dinner
at a well-known fish house, and
they brag about that kind of eat
ing for a week.”
Personally, I do not see why
one should be ashamed to chew
and swallow a salt-water catfish.

puppies and see if you don’t agree

Islands for Long Term Lease
Two islands off the Georgia Coast. These islands, BARBOURS and OLDNORS, are located
in the northern part of McIntosh County and form a part of the boundaries of Sapeloe Sound.
Both islands have fields, woods, duck ponds and deep artesian wells. Fields on both islands large
enough for landing strips. One of the islands has a lee bluff frontage of three-quarters of a
mile and is always a haven.
These islands, and the thousands of acres of marsh adjoining, offer the best in duck shooting
and marsh hen hunting, as they have been posted for years. One of the finest fishing drops
(Oldnors Basin) lies within the confines of these bounds and there is no better trout or bass
fishing in the state.
