‘Captain’ Belle Isle Dunks a Duck
Once before we nominated A. L. Belle Isle, the Atlanta transpor
tation tycoon, as Georgia’s most “Complete Angler.” That was over
a year ago. And since then A1 has accumulated enough equipment
to turn over the ghost of Ike Walton himself.
He has never known how many fly rods and reels and casting
rods and reels he owns. It would take a staff of biologists work
ing overtime with a platoon of tackle-makers to list the patterns
of bugs and flies and plugs he has stacked into his dozen tackle
boxes. He has hundreds that he has never used and will never
have the time to even tie onto a line or leader.
His equipment includes a couple of boats, a canoe, a boat trailer,
an air-conditioned dog trailer, a trailer that will accommodate 12
men, and numerous pairs of car-top carriers.
This was not enough for Al. It couldn’t produce the desired re
sults. So the other day he went fishing and came up with an
amphibian duck. His idea was to drive to a lake and start fishing
without bothering to stop and launch a boat. The duck didn’t come
with all the answers. So Bell Isle installed a pair of elevated swivel
seats abaft the stern seat and prepared for the launching.
Debut Successful But Fishless
The big splash was in Hiawassee Lake, near Murphy, N. C. The
duck took to the lake just like any duck is supposed to take to water.
Partners of Skipper Belle Isle on this maiden voyage were Tom
Hodges, the oil man, and Barrister Bob Crenshaw. They worked
the shores for bass and then trolled the deep holes for walleyes.
But the fish wouldn’t cooperate and the duck’s debut was good
for only one yearling bigmouth.
That night, on a full and bright moon, J. L. Franklin and I teamed
in the fishing seats while Hodges navigated for Captain Al. We
fished hard at various speeds, on and below the surface. We even
stooped to trolling near the bottom. But all we got was a joy ride.
The Fun Is in Planning
It perhaps is no secret that Al pays $10 an ounce for all the fish
and game he takes. He has his own philosophy about this, however.
“It’s not how much game you get—it’s how you go about it.”
Until now most of his fun has come from preparation and
planning. If he keeps on going after ’em, and if his duck will
stay afloat, some day he’s bound to hook a big one—a two-
pounder, at least.
Seriously, though, Al’s duck looks like the business. It’ll add fun
to his fishing and hunting trips—and who follows these sports for
anything but fun anyway?
Distemper Cure Alarm Is False
A good friend called and asked if I knew about the new distemper
cure and preventive.
“It’s a sure thing—never misses. It’s been tried and proven on
several thousand foxes and dogs.”
My friend and many times fellow sufferer from the effects of
distemper in favorite dogs, had convinced himself. He had been
reading Reader’s Digest, which boiled down a yarn from Country
Gentleman, May, 1946.
The story, written by Paul de Kruif and titled “Is Your Dog
Safe From Distemper?” told how the Fromm Brothers had run
down distemper after a chase that started in'the middle 1920’s.
A sub-title in the magazine flatly said:
“Microbe hunters have at last conquered the arch-killer of man’s
best friend.”
It was typical of Mr. De Kruif’s exaggerations. After reading
the yarn and checking with several leading veterinarians, we deter
mined that this “new” and fool-proof sensation was nothing but the
so-called Green Method, which sometimes works—and often doesn’t.
Distemper still is the dread disease it always has been. Until
now there is no cure, no certain preventive. Until something
else comes along to stop it, distemper will continue to take an
enormous toll of dog life. Some will use the Green Method, some
will use the Laidlaw-Duncan.
Others will depend on three shots of Virogen. And there will be
many who gamble on nothing. All will lose dogs, but the last group
will suffer the greatest losses.
The first man to discover a sure cure or preventive for distemper
will become a millionaire overnight, and dog owners will owe him an
everlasting monument.

Poll State Candidates
COLUMBIA, S. C.—The Richland county chapter of the
Izaak Walton League plans to find out just how candidates
in the legislative race stand on conservation questions.
A list of questions has been
compiled and will be sent to the
21 candidates for the House and
also the candidates for Solicitor
and the State Senate. Along with
the questions will be a note stat
ing that failure to answer will be
construed as meaning opposition
to the league’s conservation pro
gram.
Among the aims of the chapter
are: Securing some voice for
sportsmen in the selection of
county game wardens; possible
shortening of the deer season
which opens August 15; state-wide
support for anti-pollution meas
ures and better enforcement of
the game and fish laws.
Members of the chapter were
active during the last session of
the legislature in contacting Rich
land house members to gain sup
port for the anti-pollution meas
ures and the majority of the dele
gation supported these bills.
The chapter has no intention of
backing any certain ticket but will
be active in support of those can
didates pledging themselves to
support conservation legislation.
