ATHENS HOUSING AUTHORITY
Athens Housing Gets Excellent Marks On Crime
By James Fair
Director of Management
Rick Parker, Executive Director of
Athens Housing Authority, salutes the
Police Officers assigned to the AHA
residents and staff on the success the
Housing Authoring has achieved over the
past three years in reducing crime
throughout its communities. Currently,
there are 3,200 low income families
residing in eleven developments under
management.
Since 1990, the number of reported
lease violations and crime committed
have decreased drastically. In 1990,
10,543 police reports were recorded by
the Athens-Police Department. A total
of 750 or 7% of all criminal reports writ
ten during this period were written on
Athens Housing Authority property.
Serious crimes committed within the Ci
ty of Athens account for 38% of all
crimes reported, while 233 or 31% of the
750 police reports written in public hous
ing were serious.
From 1990-91 to 1991-92, serious
crimes committed on public housing pro
perty dropped from 218 to 179. The
figures for 1992-93 also declined by 31%
from 179 to 56. Lease violations and
crimes have been reduced by 43% since
the housing authority started tracking all
lease violations and criminal activities.
