ZEBRA SALUTES
A Poem Honoring Mr. Howard B. Stroud
Mr. Howard B. Stroud has served as teacher, principal, interim superintendent, and, most recently, associate
superintendent of the Clarke County Schools. His complete dedication to the progress and education of Clarke
County’s children (in my opinion) is unsurpassed.
The following poem was written as a tribute to Mr. Stroud upon his retirement in 1992:
(As I searched for a poem, hours turned into days.
Couldn’t find one to fit ya’ - so this is tailor-made)
To Mr. Howard B. Stroud - A courageous, strong
man: You have ventured far out - away from land.
Thru rough seas you’ve sailed, amid the darkest
storm clouds, but you are a very strong man, Mr.
Stroud.
You knew that behind any cloud was the sun, so you
continued the work you’d begun.
Because of the work of such a skilled shipmaster your
cargo of children averted disaster.
Your cargo was precious - your pride and joy.
You’ve brought them thru safely - I say, “Ship
Ahoy’ ’!
Your anchor was God, as you guided the ship.
When tempest - tossed, you held a firm grip.
You’ve weathered the storms - you’ve passed the test.
It behooves me to say you’re one of the best!
You’ve done so much for the boys and girls, so sit
back and watch your dreams unfurl.
Thru children you’ve taught and thru those you’ve
inspired, your ship will sail on, e’en tho’ you’ve
retired.
So much of your work thru others doth shine.
You’ve striven to help those who’ve fallen behind.
You’ve been a lighthouse, a beacon and more that
served to guide the floundering to shore.
You’ve helped ALL the children, I hasten to say.
High, low or average, you’ve pointed the way.
You changed not the wind, but adjusted their sails,
and the good that you’ve done will always prevail.
Mr. Stroud, you’ve given others great inspiration, we
do humbly thank you for such dedication.
As you embark on your voyage (or pursuit) of leisure,
I hope that each moment is destined to please ya’
you are, indeed, a great educator!
Most Clarke County children can now spell
“potato.”
