Timothy Christian Academy
When I first saw Mrs. Barbara Crockett
and a few of her students one day in
Hodgsons’ Pharmacy, I knew there was
something very special about them. They
were all lined up for their ice cream
cones. The girls were dressed in bur
gundy jumpers and the boys were
wearing khaki pants and burgundy shirts.
Mrs. Crockett was like the motherhen’
watching over them, loving but firm. The
children had a sense of confidence, but on
the other hand, sweetly innocent. They
were polite and respectful to everyone;
but, they especially had a willingness to
please their teacher. One might ask in
today’s society: “How do you raise
children to have an attitude like that?”
Mrs. Crockett’s response to that question
was “With the love of Jesus.”
Mrs. Crockett is the administrator for
Timothy Christian Academy located on
Timothy Road in Athens. Timothy Christ
ian Academy is a member of the Georgia
Association of Christian Schools and the
American Association of Christian
Schools. The Academy was started on
August 22, 1994 and is a ministry of
Timothy Baptist Church. The mission of
the school is to “provide high quality
academic programs anchored in the Word
of God” as stated in the handbook. The
staff and the administrators at Timothy
Christian Academy believe that it is their
‘call’ and ‘duty’ to: (1) assist the parents
in teaching the children how to become
productive citizens, and (2) inculcate the
teachings of Christ.
When Reverend Jerry Hutchins, the
pastor of Timothy Baptist Church, came
to Athens about ten years ago, it was part
of his vision for the church to establish
the outreach programs and to found a
school. Traditionally, black churches
have contributed tremendously to the
academic development and growth of
the black community. Pastor Hutchins
believes that the elimination of the Word
of God from academia has been
somewhat detrimental to the black
community. Although, the majority of the
students are African-American, all
nationalities are welcome.

The Academy uses the Christian-based
‘A Beka Book Curriculum’ developed by
Pensacola Christian School located in
Pensacola, Florida. The curriculum
includes: reading/phonics; English;
spelling/poetry; writing/penmanship;
mathematics; science; social studies;
health and physical education; computer
skills; art; music/choir; history/geo
graphy, and Bible studies. Bible studies
encompass attending Chapel every Wed
nesday morning and thirty minutes of
Bible study daily.
The Academy has proven to be quite
effective in, that, for the past two years
the kindergarten class scored on a second
grade level after taking the Stanford
Achievement Test and the Otis Lennon
School Ability Test. In addition, the other
grades scored above their current grade
level in reading and other areas. Further,
three of the first grade students made
perfect scores at the fifth grade level.
Presently, twenty-five students attend.
Fundraising is an important element
that assists in making scholarships, such
as the Scholarship Endowment Fund,
available as well as financial support for
operating expenses. For example, during
the month of February, a “Hoop-a-Thon”
was held to raise funding for the school. It
was a great success with six teams par
ticipating. The teams were: (1) Timothy
Baptist Church Men’s Team; (2) Timothy
Baptist Church Youths’ Team; (3) the
Navy School Team; (4) St. John
Apostolic Holiness Church Men's Team;
(5) St. John Apostolic Holiness Church
Youths’ Team, and (6) the Big Boys (a
community-wide team). Profits were
made from the sale of tickets, con
cessions, and entry fees for participating
teams. Through fundraising efforts, the
curriculum also offers field trips to
enhance the educational development of
the students. Other activities include:
swimming, bowling, skating, arts and
crafts, choir, academic instruction, and
Bible time.
Thus, Timothy Christian Academy is
certainly a school that lives up to its
mission statement. The mission is to
“provide high quality academic programs
anchored in the Word of God.” For
