Minority Services and Programs and the African American Cultural Renter will be celebrating Black History
Quarter by exploring the vast continent of Africa. Many peopleHave misconceptions about Africa, Black
History Quarter will dispel the rumors by presenting speakers, fashions, customs, exhibits, and ceremonies
of Africa. If you have ever wanted to know the truth about Africa beyond the textbooks, then it is
mandatory that you attend all the planned events.
7 th Annual Liberation Lecture
African Americans in Africa: “Experiences in the Motherland”
A panel of African Americans who have spent extensive time in various parts of Africa will discuss then-
experiences and the future for African Americans to work and live in Africa. Artifacts from Africa will be

AFRICAN NAMING CEREMONY
In the West African tradition, men and women receive as many as three names - one at birth, one upon
becoming a young adult and a third either self chosen or as a result of an accomplishment or significant event
in their life. Each name is marked by an elaborate “naming ceremony”. Come be a part of a naming ceremony

AFRICAN FASHION SHOW
Nubile African princess and majestic Zulu warriors dressed in traditional day wear, evening wear, business
and formal attire. African clothing, drumming, dancing, artifacts and food. Be there for the fashion show of
the year which will display and explain African clothing. Thursday, February 19,1998, 7 PM • Georgia Hall
A TASTE OF AFRICA
Sample the foods of Africa. Delicacies from various regions of Africa will be served and culture from which
the food is derived will be discussed. Come prepared to eat and learn!!

TRADITIONAL GHANAIAN WEDDING
An American couple will really get married in a wedding from Ghana, all the color and pageantry, all the
ritual and traditions will be displayed. The couple and bridal party will be in African attire. You and all the
other guests are asked to dress in native fashions as well. They are getting married but you are the guest at
the wedding and reception. Sunday, March 8,1998, 5 PM • Memorial Hall Ballroom and Adinkra Hall
