WE SHOULD SMILE.
The thing that goes the farthest to
WETii making life worth while
That costs the least and does the most,
is just a pleasant smile
The smile that bubbles from the heart
that loves its fellow men
Will drive away the cloud of gloom tmd
coax the ,, sun again.
Ft’s full of worth and geednese, too,
with manly kindness blent;
It’s worth a million dollars and it
doesn’t cost a cent
There is no room for Fatness when we
see a cheery Emile.
It always has the same good k>ok—
It’s never out of style;
It nerves us on to try again wlien fail
ure makes us blue—
Such dimples of encouragement are
good for me and you.
So smile away; folks understand
by a smile is meant— j
It’s worth a. million dollars and it
doesn't cost a cent. :

Freparing ° The Soil
j I * of the Garden
j The soil that is to be used for vege
tables " should be thoroughly prepared

desirable, and when an area that ()iat has
never been plowed more than 4 inches
if there is no danger of washing, so as
to get it in a good mechanical condition
before planting time. In the cooler re
■ gions of the South freezing will pulver
ize the soil, while in regions where
j freezes do not occur the pulverizing
■ must be done by harrowing and
vation. Sandy - - - loams or soils that con
tain a large amount of humus should
iowTheroii be plowed far ;;7u.e enough in advance to al
planting.
Thorough preparation by
vTTlSf wTrk "of cultivation. St’ It » is
not no. sufficient sufficient _ . _ to smooth smooth ,, and ..nd „ , level level the the
surface; the pulverizing should extend
down several inches.
MANURES AND FERTIUZSRS.
The soil for vegetable growing 3houkl
be rieli and well supplied with humus
Barnyard or stable manure is the best
fertilizer, because it furnishes both;
plant food and humus. An application
of 20 to 30 tons of manure to the acre i
iu very satisfactory, and on some soils j
tVs application will need but little re- i
inforcing with commercial fertilisers.'
The manure should be applied far
enough in advance of planting time to
allow it to decay. Where coarse ma
nure is used, it should be apj Ted in the
fail and turned under, but well-rotted
manure should be applied after plowing
and shouId b „ wtM mixed with the soil
by harrowing. On many soils it is ad
viaable to apply commercial fertilizer, j
especially phosphates, in addition to the
manure. An application of 300 to 600
pounds of acid phosphate^ to the acre!
will be sufficient. Sandy soils
often need a little additional potash, |
which can be applied economically in
the form of muriate or sulphate of pot-1
ash at the rate of 200 to 400 pounds to ‘
the acre. An application of 100 pound:; i
of nitrate of soda will give the plants a
start in the spring before the nitrogen ;
in the manure has become available.
W’here manure is not available, some
leguminous crop, such as cowpeas, soy j
beans, vetch, or crimson clover, should j
be turned under to supply humus ar.d a j
part of the nR.-o“ev.. Additional fcrt.I-1
uiug oUiaonts can be applied in the No' j
form of corilmer cial fertilizers.
definite ^ can be ^ for the kind

as this varies with the crop and soil. |
In most cases it is safe to apply 1,000
2 .*>00 pounds of a high-grade fertili-;
per cent nitrogen, 8 per cent phosphe
lie acid, and 6 to 8 per cent potash
should give good results if the soil is
well supplied with humus. This fertili

150 pounds nitrate cf soda. .
650 pounds cotton seed meal. |
1.000 pounds acid phosphate. 16 per

200 Pounds muriate or sulphate of

It should be borne in mind that coir

isfactory results unless the soil is well
supplied with ___________________ humus. In ___ fact, ____, large ,„ ljV
quantities of fertilizers are justified op
ly where the soil is in good mechanical
condition. Manv soils in the South that
have been in cultivation for a long time
are in a poor mechanical condition and
need humus., which can be supplied by
turning under green crops of coarse
manure.
