Singing Convention here last
Sunday. The day was fine and
all seemed to enjoy it to its ful¬

Lee Hutchens from Copperhill,
Tenn., and Mr. Williams, of

WHY THE USE OF DRUGS
SOMETIMES INCREASES
Atlanta, Ga.—The danger of a seri¬
ous increase in the use of such drugs
as cocaine, morphine and heroin it
the prohibition law is made any more
stringent in Georgia, is being foreseen
by thoughtful court and police offi¬
cials here, and may become a serious
problem.
It lias been noted that every time
the “lid" is screwed down so tight
as to make it impossible for the aver¬
age man to secure ordinary stimulat
ing beverages, the number of dope
fiends increases, and the problem is
of the user, but particularly in the
case of cocaine often makes him a
dangerous criminal.
A temperate use of such beverages
light, wholesome beer is regarded
by many as the ideal solution of the
Whole liquor problem, as total prohl
The countries which have led
world in thrift and achievement, like
England and Germany, have froth time
immemorial been users of malt and
spirituous liquors. The only country
which has had permanent and real to¬
tal prohibition is Turkey, and while
it is true that the Turks generally
comply with the strict letter of the
prophet’s inhibition touching wine,
they are notoriously addicted to the
use of opium and other narcotics, and
to coffee in a concentrated form, with
the result that they are the most back¬
ward race in Europe.
GEORGIA’S EXPERIENCE
IS BEING INVESTIGATEO
Atlanta, Ga.—Whether or not Geor¬
gia has had the same experience as
other countries of the world in con¬
nection with a prohibition measure
that has generally permitted the sale
of beer, but forbidden the sale of
whiskey, is being investigated in de¬
tail in connection with the proposal
of radical prohibition leaders to make
the law more stringent.
Statistics received from the United
States Department of Commerce and
Labor, and from foreign countries,
tend to show that beer has been an
aid rather than a hindrance to tem¬
perance. “Marse” Henry Watterson
of the Louisville Courier-Journal is
quoted as saying that “the introduc
t ion of beer in America has done more
for temperance than all the temper¬
ance societies and all the prohibition
laws combined.”
The per capita consumption of beer
in America shows a growing popular¬
ity of this beverage as opposed to
stronger alcoholic drinks. The figures
show that as communities progress
and manners and customs improve,
the people as a whole turn gradually
from the strong alcoholic drinks to the
lighter ones. It Is also shown that
where beer has been taken away from
the public by extreme legislation, it
has tended to increase the use of other
