I IP C IP T # Tennis Tournament Attracts Many Mr. Bonner, Physical Director Re ports Fine Prospects With Great Enthusiasm Voiced With the announcement last week by Mr. Bonner, West Geor gia College physical director, to the effect that a tournament will be held shortly to determine the tennis team to represent the school during the coming season, the tennis enthusiastics responded immediately by a large group ol coth men and women students. The tournament will probably be neld, Mr. Bonner said, at the end Oj. six weens, in which time he expects all entrants to get into men best form. Then the team will make several trips, playing jL.n.or and senior colleges, and the major prep schools of the state. The men s list brought out sev eral new'comers in the game, as well as some veterans of this sec tion. The t>.o favorites are o;nar Hay and Leveny wampoell, both of whom much is expected. Hay, with his terriac service and Camp bell, with his w r onderful ability for placement locs, will make a siead ly double combination. In the women's ranks there are several stars, the leader being Hazel Jones, who has a beautiful serve and who can cut the ball with an accuracy which wall be hard to cope with, no matter w'ho the opposition may be. However, there are many other stars, who with practice will furnish abun dant material for a good tennis team. The tournament will be played on the courts in front of the wo men s dormitory. The men will play for the best 3 out of 5 sets in Loth singles an ddoubles. The w’o men will only play for the best 2 out of 3 sets. With the widespread interest tnd abundance of good material, ir. Bonner expects a good tennis jam, capable, he says, of holding s own from the start with that of y in the state. Can you “Dig ’Em Up”? If so send them to us, and if acceptable, we will publish with your name. ‘Sports In Review' It is my whole-hearted intension to attribute my best abilities to the composing of this college paper, as the sports correspond ent i will do my best to serve the stuaent body and all readers of the w est Georgian. Our editor, Mr. marker, oesmwed this nonor upon me mid i must that I can ful fill his continence in me. The emblem “Hill-billies” w'as voted on by the majority of the students, this decision was an nounced in the cnapel exercises, and within an hour after tne an nouime~mn„ petitions were circu lating in favor ot changing the em blem to "cufialo,’ Orphans of 'the Storm,” “Wild-cat” and other vi cious names. Phis is very, very hard to understand. Preparations are being made for the fall tennis tournament which will ue held witnin the next ten days according to the Athletic Di rector, Coach Bonner. The match es will be held on the two best courts and a large number of fans are c.vpoCieu to turn out for the occasion, xiairis "oc Hay, city champion of this year, should ha\e little trouble in disposing of the opp< o.Liuii. ii.t; urawings will take place the first oi next week. A certain Mr. Taylor noncahant ly dropped the undersized basket ball unough the goal Ironx a point very near the center of the court. “I can t shoot this bail - he said, and meant it. Several more such shot occurred with the same reply —he missed occasionally. I can t wait to see this man lay hands on the real thing, somethings bound to happen. Judging from the prospects, the team will be very formidable. Fif ty men are expected to report next month and it w r il] be hard to select five men from such a number of basketeers. Basketball will be play ed intercollegiately, as I under stand it. Here’s hoping West Geor gia College starts early in acclaim ing honors for herself. Freshmen Will Test Sophs in Frist Speed Ball Contest Here’s something stirring! The Freshman will endeavor to give the Sophs a severe trimming in the first speed-ball game ever play ed in the state of Georgia, or might be right in saying tne whole of the southern states. This game is an exciting and strategic one and is seemingly a combination of football, hocney and soccer. Each side is composed of eleven men, the position names have not yet been learned. .Little is known of the game yet, but it is being adopt ed by several higii scnools and col leges in Georgia. This game will oe played only among our stud ents for the present, out we hope to schedule with other teams soon. ' W. G. C.
