SPORTS OF THE DAY IN
BRIEF
In the recent Who's Who election,
Sam Fields, basketball captain, was
elected the most athletic bov at West
Georgia- Personally speaking, we
know of no finer athlete anywhere than
Sam- We do not consider his playing
abilities alone, but also his fine sports
manship*
And that holds true for the entire
West Georgia team. They are all true
sportsmen, playing the game fair an 1
c ] ea n. It is indeed a pleasure to watch
a game free of roughness and of dis
courtesy to the referee-
Too, our boys play well as well as
fair. Thoy have lost only three games
in the last month and two of those by
very close margins- Ordinarily, a
school, during its first year of com
petitive athletics, plays only small
<<pick-up’' teams, but not so with the
Braves; Mr. Bonner has a tough sched
ule for his boys and they are coming
through with their heads up.
Here’s wishing you all the success
in the world, boys!
During the past three years the
public has turned its back almost en
tirely on the boxing world, and now
the grapplers hold the spotlight. We
haven’t had one of the old $1,000,000
fights since Tunney and Dempsey
swapped blows.
But why not? The M’adison Square
Garden Corporation has control over
all the leading fighters except Baer,
and puts them up in matches with com
paratively unknowns* They're offer
ing the two Maxes, Baer and Schmel
ing, SIOO,OOO each t sling leather at
f each other, but they will be hard to
come to terms* Such a match would
prove popular because nobody can de
cide whether Baer really defeated the
German at the latter's prime,, or, as
Schmeling claims, got him with the
aid of the intolerable heat-
Joe Knight' Georgia’s representa
tive in the boxing world, earned a
draw with Rosenbloom, light heavy
weight champion, in New York Mon
day night. With a little more expe
lience Knight should put Georgia on
the spot*
Then as for wrestling, there has
never before been such a group of
wrestlers of their class- Landos,
Browning, 'Steele, George, Savoldi
boy, what a bunch! And all of them
are real showmen. They could no
doubt make a mule appear to be ap
plying jiu jitsu.
The usual spring football practice
has begun at all the major colleges,
and thig year finds the greatest array
of coaches the south has ever had.
McGughin, Wynne, Mehre, Alexander,
Wade, Anderson —any of those famous
mentors will cope with the country’s
best and most of them are superior.
About the most foolish thing in our
opinion that has taken place in late
years in the football world is Yale’s
persistence in hiring former Yale men
only as coaches* This has led to
Yale’s almost complete downfall at
football and a general let down in the
athletics at that school* About a
month ago this tradition was broken,
and the Yale alumni are coming back
with renewed hopes* Well, it couldn’t
furt!

With the beginning of the Vines-
Tilden world tour, tennis has finally
become a resemblance of a major
s'port* At Cleveland last week 2,000
tennis fans w r ere turned away, every
available seat being occupied at the
fourth match between these two stars.
Tilden copped the first two matches
the canvas courts handicapping Vines
greatly. Then Vines took the next
two in real style* Consequently, the
leading critics have put “Uncle Bill”
-u fifth place among the leader’s
ranks, since Vines is no longer the
top-ranking star —just another proof
JACK SMITH, Editor
that youth comes before age-
It’s nothing less than remarkable
Hat old man Public still puts out to
Tilden's matches. He’s fading fast
and lie’s undoubtedly the poorest
sportsman in the game. Last year he
refused to finish five matches because
of linesmen’s close decisions on line
balls. Tilden owes his livelihood to
tennis, and instead of giving the best
impression possible on the public, he
makes life miserable for linesmen ami
puts a bad taste for the game in ten
uis fans' mouths.
Down in Australia last week Fred
Perry, English star, strengthened his
claim to the world’s title as world's
number 1 player by trouncing Jack
Crawford, Australian claimant of the
title, in two matches. Crawford plays
a brilliant and spectacular game, being
until .recently recognized as leading
claimant to the tennis crown* Perry,
on the other hand, plays a steady game
and is perilaps the most easy going
player among the leaders. He will
probably be recognized by the Inter
national Tennis Association at that or
ganization’s next meeting.
The United States is said to be def
initely out of the 1936 Olympics, to
bo held in Berlin- This action was
taken because of unfair impositions
cn Jewish athletes in Germany. Dur
ing the last twenty years the United
States teams have stolen the show at
every meeting of the teams of the
world’s leading nations; therefore, the
other nations will probably encourage
Herr Hitler in his actions against
Jewish athletes. The Jews have lead
ers in all fields of sports and they are
to be greatly admired for keeping up
their spirits so well under such gTeat
handicaps

It was with great sorrow and re
morse that we read the cheer leader’s
message on the bulletin board about
two weeks ago after the student body
had walked out of a pep meeting. We
were among those who left and we are
bitterly ashamed of it*
But it’s too late to save a sinking
ship (a sinking spirit this time). Come
on, students, let’s back 'em up*
They're doing it for us and we should,
in appreciation, if for nothing else,
back them up by coming to all pep
meetings and giving a yell for dear
ole West Georgia! “Come along, lit
tle Bravies, come along, come along;
we're headin' for every pep meeting!"
What about that for our theme song?
WEST GEORGIA TRIMS
U. S. B.
The West Georgia Braves gave the
L. S* B. Bluobirds a genuine dust-off
Tuesday nite in the college gym. The
Bluebirds from Atlanta were supposed
to be a strong quintet, but Coach
Bonner’s boys seemed to think other
wise, licking them 42 to 19* The game
was fast with Driver and Fields lead
ing the locals, bagging 15 and 13 points
respectively* The Braves were especial
ly good in breaking up the Fni\eisity
Boys’ passes* The Braves second
team played some in the second quarter
and held their own with the visitors.
Hearn was especially good on the de
fense*

Friday night, January 26, the West
Georgia boys avenged themselves for
a defeat suffered three weeks ago at
the hands of Alabama States Teachers’
college, taking their ferocity out on
the Birmingham-Southern freshmen*
The game was fast and close through
out, as the score, 38-32, indicates*
The Braves took advantage of the
visitors’ complete bewilderment at so
many good looking members of the
fairer sex, and scored in the f-t
seconds. Then during the rest of t e
first quarter the West Georgians go (

THE WEST GEORGIAN
SUMMARY OF GAMES
OF LAST MONTH
After scalping the Tallapoosa bas
keteors and then the Douglasville all
stars, the Braves of W- G. C. started
the regular scheduled basketball soa
sou with a bang on January 13- Al
though defeated by the Ft. Beuning
team 36 to 33, the Braves showed their
metal aiul were defeated only after a
hand-fought game. In this game Gla
zier and Fields starred for the locals,
and Miller and Randall for the sol
diers. This was one of tho best games
ever seen in northwest Georgia-
Then, on January 16, the Southern
Union college cage stars from Alabama
came over to fill up their bacon box
and take it home, but our boys gave
their answer with a 44 to 29 victory
over the visitors. This game was fast
and clean fought with Fields, Hearn,
and Driver starring.
Then came the Avorst licking suffer
ed by our cagesters as yet. On Janu
ary 19 they motored over to Jackson
\ ille, Ala., and Avere quickly subdued
by the strong Alabama State Teachers
quintet to the tune of 44 to 9- Hughes,
Alabama all-state star, was the "big"
man in tho Teacher’s machine. Almon
aa as the only Brave that could get
going. llOAA'eA’er, the Teachers have
been established for many years and
have a much larger field to pick from,
and it is only natural that they should
Avin. But just Avait a year or two and
let the two teams get together. Oh
boy, Avhat a game that’ll be*
The boys took the Tallapoosa troup
for another ride on January 23, show
ing great, form. The team was begin
ning to really click about then.
Then came the game with Birming
ham Southern, Avhich is described else
where in this section.
Tuesday night, January 30, the Tate
C- C. C. came through with a victory
ever our boys, but only by superior
leach. On the Tate team were two
former all-state men, and the others
had much past experience- The Braves
Avere so much smaller that they were
just Avhipped down trying to get the
ball off the back-board. This g*ame
was very slow, but probably found our
boys more exhausted than they had
been in any previous game.
Then, last Friday night, February
2 Mr. Bonner’s boys trounced the
Reinhardt college team 40 to 15. The
BraA r es’ second team played about a
half of the /Janie and the result Avas
neA r er in doubt-
In the games so far Almon has bag
ged the highest total number of points.
Fields, Staples, and Driver also have
a high number.
The regular team for the past six
games haA r e been composed of Staples,
of center: Fields and Almon, for
wards; Hearn and Driver, guards-
In addition to the rest of the sched
ule, Mr. Bonner is considering enter
ing the team in the Southwestern bas
ketball tournament for junior colleges
to be held at Statesboro.
seemingly lost*
But with the second quarter the
Alabamians began to show their class,
getting nine points. Mr. Bonner’s boys
eased up a bit and bagged nine also*
The high-point man of the night was
McCall, guard of the visitors, with 14
points* Then came Almon, local star,
with 11 counters* Fields, Driver
(Braves) and Chisam, Lanky Panther
center, came next with 8 points each.
The line-ups were as follows:
Chisam (8) C Staples (4)
Bridges (2) F Fields (8)
Neville (4) F Almon (11)
McCall (14) G Driver (8)
Welch (4) G Taylor (1)
Substitutions for B* S.: Clements
for Neville at beginning of second
quarter; Neville for Clements at half*
Substitutions for W. G. C*: Hearn
(6) fo r Taylor at beginning of second
