The faultless young man at the foot of the stairs gazed upon her with adoring eyes “Some stepper,” thought he, and smiled a tender smile as he remember ed the ring at that moment reposing over his wildly beating heart- “But what is the matter?”, his thought pur sued. For at that instant on the fourth stair this porsonification of animation paused, faltered and her nose not to bo outdone by the hair, the eyes, the cheeks, the lips, or the breast —also burst into animation, “Ka-choo!” went the nose- By way of result, a rather disheveled head of hair, a pair of startled eves, and a littlo red nose appeared from the depths of a big broad handkerchief, which had been hastily brought into play. “Oh, dear me,” said sh© in a rather husky voico, “T have taken the most awful cold-” “Well, I wouldn’t mind if I were you,” said the young man, “for you have a very charming way of sneez ing, and T adore slightly husky voices ” “I’m sure you are very nice-” Marye gave one of her smiles that could melt the heart of any man and calmly continued her way down tjhc stairs. But alas! Hardly had the ninth stair boon reached before the handkerchief, again had to be dragged forth- This time the impeachable Marye lost all of her impeachableness, at least in her own eyes, for now she was thorou ,hlv tickled by sneezes, and of what use is a stately descent without a stately coun tenance to accompany it,? So, much to Harvey’s delight, she threw all pose to the winds and skipped down the re maining stairs almost into her lover’s a rms —almost. From th© depths of its being the nose took just that moment to shine forth once more. ‘ * Kachoo! ka-choo! ’ ’ “Scat!” The word, sounded loud and clear, into the stillness that fol lowed the latest wild outburst. “Robert!” This word also sounded loud and clear, for the exasperated Mary© considered that she had fully enough troubles without a little broth er’s ridiculing*. “Aw, good night! ” A shock of black hair, and a pair of horn-rimmed spec tacles emerged from the shadow of the staircase, helpfully gaiided by Harvey V grip upon the collar. “What have you to say for your self, young man?” demanded Marye. ~“I think I’m a n ass,” responded the fourteen-year-old bov with a sigh, “if T hadn’t uv hollered that atcha, I’d uv known how to do that in my next recitation. Now I’ve missed it, do gone it. The kiss I mean “Robert!’ Marye glared at the re treating back. “I shall tell mama to stop this elocution business at once. The idea!” “Well, boys will be boys,” soothe Harvey consolingly. “Shall we ,*o on to the dance?” “Go t© the dance! Why I can never go with this cold- I was just going to tell you to let’s stay home. “Oh-uh, all right-” Harvey reluc tantly agreed. His disappointment was very obvious, for had he not planned to rropose under the arbor of roses .out at the club?
