Resume Of Activities
Offered To Students
Just as the Italian - Ethiopian
fracas is, so are sports at West
Georgia, this, its third year—open
ing with a hang. There are enough
tournaments at this early stage
to make one dizzy. If a fellaw
walked in the gym without cau
tion, he would immediately expose
himself to a, melee of gloved fists,
flying feet, flying tackles, and a
various sizes and shapes of balls.
They might well be termed “Bras
well’s Varieties.”
The progress on the golf course
is being watched eagerly by all
the golfers, including certain
members of the faculty. This is
really a great addition to the
school, and the credit is due
largely to the city of Carrollton
and Mr. Gunn.
It was in this game that the
expression “I’m one of the Jones
boys” is thought to have origin
ated.
And a fellow will be proud when
showing the folks over the school
to add with an air of nonchalance
that “over there” is the golf
course. What class! and maybe
caddying will be added to the
list of activities. Maybe we can
arrange for “Rosy” to stick around
3 more years!
How a fellow dances in a man
ner anywhere near correct is a
mystery to us. First he breaks on
a girl, who immediately freezes
him with a stare for breaking on
Mr. Watson, or some other Apollo
of the toe-disintegraters. Then
after stepping on her feet several
more times than on the floor, he
feels her making all sorts of fran
tic motions to some other guy to
please stop the massacre. And
when he finally breaks, the first
victim walks over to the side to
allow his feet to kinda cool off,
only to step right back out in a
minute and say, “Please, may 1
push you around awhile?” What
a mystery!
We cant help thinking of the
deft of football material around.
A team of 175 pounds could easily
be formed, and that is big enough
for senior college material.
And football is the best adver
tisement a school can have. Geor
gia and Tech have not become
known to the extent they are
merely through scholastic stand
ing. Football, besides being an ex
cellent form of exercise, magne
tizes old man public, and will
build the school spirit up to its
highest pitch. Its good to think
about at the least.
And while we’re in a suggestive
mood, a cake race would be a
great event to add to those al
ready here. Making all freshmen
enter and awarding cakes to the
winners, we could make this an
annual event. With their present
appetites, some of the freshmen
would no doubt break several auto
speed records in their eagerness
to win a cake.
Basketball
First call for intramural basket
ball practice will be issued im
mediately after Thanksgiving. This
game will then hold the sport
light for some three or four
months, with several intramural
tournaments being held. Games
with other schools will begin just
before the Christmas holidays. An
extensive schedule is being ar
ranged by Virgil Barrett, manag
er, and trips will be made to many
other schools in Georgia and Ala
bama. Letters will be awarded
members of the squad and man
ager at the end of the season.
Due to the graduation of last
year’s entire team, a new' quintet
will bear the red and blue this
winter.

Tumbling
Tumbling promises to be one of
the favorite sports this year at
West Georgia. Last year little in
terest was shown in tumbling, be
cause of the lack of men experi
enced in this field. This year how
ever, we have real showmen
around in Andy Floyd and Jack
Litton, and inspired by these fol
lows, about 40 prospects are out.
Floyd has had much experience in
this field, and he and Litton will
assist Coach Brasw'ell in handling
these less proficient on the bars
and mats. This sport attracts only
those heavily laden with intestin
al fortitude, and should a fellow’s
neck survive long enough, a won
derful development in muscles
will result. The coordination of the
muscles of a good tumbler in the
act of performing is beautiful to
watch. Exhibitions by the team
will be given from time to time
during the year.
Group Dancing
No activity in the athletic pro
gram is attracting quite so much
attention as is group dancing.
The response has been so great
that 5 classes are being held each
Friday, with a total enrollment of
172 men and women. Among the
types taught will be the Grand
March, Ball Room Dancing, and a
modern interpretation of the
square dance. The interest was
stimulated greatly by the social
on the past Saturday night. Dot
Justice and Robert Newell are
student managers of group danc
ing, with Grace Wing serving the
capacity of assistant. The ability
to dance is becoming almost es
sential to social success nowadays,
and therefore this feature is con
sidered a star member of the
program.
Ri fiery
Riflery is scheduled to take a
prominent place among the sports.
Quite a large number of students
have expressed a desire to come
out when the season opens in a
short while.
The school is fortunate is hav
ing a very competent rifleman in
the student body, and he is going
to assist in this field. This stud
ent, Edgar Wright, after winning
out with two others over 800 other
C. M. T. C. men at Fort McClellan
in Anniston, Ala. this summer,
went from there to Camp Perry,
Ohio to compete for national hon
ors. There he made a very impres
sive record. Wright knows all
about rifles and should be of much
assistance to the team in this
year’s activities. This sport will
be opened shortly, and offers real
benefits to those choosing it.
Dawson Lee: Why the tooth
brush in your coat lapel?
Bishop: It’s my class pin—l go
to Colgate. —Temple Owl.
Young man: Pardon me, this
must be the wrong berth.
Miss Weaver (sighing): How
you boys do jump at conclusions. —
Rammer Jammer.
Freshman: Aw, lemme alone.
Nobody cares if I drink myself to
death.
Professor: I do; you’re using
my liquor.—Punch Bowl.
Stewart McKibben: Darling, you
are the most beautiful girl in the
world. I love you, must have you,
I can’t live without you. Will you
marry me?
Grace Rogers: Who, me? —Ex-
change.
Jane Luck (1934): Stop! I’ll call
the chaperon.
Jane Luck (1935): Stop! Wait’ll
the chaperon passes by.—Ranger.

Changes Are Made In
Athletic Setup
The athletic plan set up at West
Georgia this year is slightly dif
ferent from that of last year. A
(lass is held for group activities
on Mondays for men and Tues
days tor women. Then a class for
discussions is held on Wednes
days for men and Thursdays for
women. One hour a week is to be
taken by each student for some
other kind of athletic activity, the
time not specified.
Men students have royal blue
trunks, and form a sight quite
pleasant to the eye when seen
in a group. The women, though
not being required to wear any
special colored suits.
Among the sports added to the
already large list are badminton
and shuffle board. Shuffle board is
played on alleys about fifty feet
long with discs. It has proven
very popular in Florida, and is
considered a valuable addition to
the program.
Archery and soccer for the wo
men will be started later, and a
volley ball league is already in
action.
James Lasseter has around 15
wrestlers working out, and re
ports favorably on the prospective
grapplers.
’Tis a modern youth that knows
his zippers.—Yellow Jacket.

f
Tennis
Though getting off to a late
start, tennis is again enjoying its
usual popularity among the sports
here at West Georgia. The two
courts on the west side of the
campus have been reconditioned
and topsoiled, are in excellent
condition. Two creosote nets have
been added to the equipment.
With the graduation of “Oc”
Hay, Beverly Campbell, and Nor
wood Floyd went the great West
Georgia team of the past two
seasons. This trio lost nary a
match, and were tied only once.
Hay, with his low lobs and un
ortnodox backhand was invinc
ible, and was never extended a
great deal during the entire two
seasons. While Campbell and
Floyd weren’t quite in Hay’s class,
they were plenty good, and won
a large majority of their matches
Campbell’s main asset was his
bullet service and volleys, while
Floyd was noted for his all round
good game. This trio was a good
one and will be hard to replace.
Practice has not been going
on long enough to tell very much
about this year’s prospects. Jack
Stone has shown promise, and
with practice should develop into
good team material. Several other
men seem to be rather efficient
with the racket.
The list of matches with other
schools is expected to be enlarged.
Men’s and women’s tournaments,
both in singles and doubles are
being planned for the fall.
