PCK/CN AILITI Cl
;\RLKNK PHILLIPS, Kdltor of The Chieftain
Arlene Phillips, a hybrid cosmo-'
politiun with the chubby Hoover
ish face and the skin you love to
touch, was born In Cincinnati,
Ohio, on November 1(1, 1919, exact
ly eighteen years ago today. So
we celebrate, indirectly, the an
niversary of that auspicious mo
ment when our beloved editor
entered into this mundane world.
Somewhere along the line in her
various wonderings, she acquired
the priceless ability to say, “Yes,
Miss Ward” with a changeless in
flection and a poker face.
From Cincinnati she moved to
Kentucky where her patents were
missionaries. Arlene must have
some of that spirit because she
certainly brought word of the
ways of the North when she first
came here. Since then, however,
she has become a true southern
gal and she eats her fried chicken
with gusto). In Kentucky she liv
ed for five years, gaining much in
her charm and southern qualities.
Soon, however, she moved to the
“Yam Dankie Country” to Ithica,
New York, for two years, and from
there to Skaneateles, New York,
her last northern residence. Here
she entered into the fifth grade,
skipping the third and the fourth.
(This was due either to her moth
er’s coaching or to Arlines bril
lance. Personally we think it
was the former).
Arlene entered West Georgia last
January and immediately began
to take a most active part in all
organizations. She is the editor of
the Chieftain, assistant editor of
the West Georgian, vice-president
of Alpha Psi, Parliamentarian of
the Debating Club, an inter-Col
legiate Debator, and a member of

Golf Course Here
To Be Finished Soon
In a recent announcement, Dean
W. Fred Gunn stated that the
college will have a golf course of
its own in the near future. He
further said in a recent interview
that a movement is now on foot,
and contributions are being solici
ted for the course, which is to be
located on college property. The
course, previously started, is ex
pected to be completed by Febru
ary, 1938. The probability is that
it will be for use sometime in
June.
This project carried on by the
college is just one of the many
additions and improvements that
are now in progress.
THE WEST GEORGIAN, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1937
Zeta Sigma Pi, and the Dramatic
Club.
Although she has wanted to lead
a sympnony orchestra, she has
settled down to be a Hospital Dieti
tian. The idea of swinging a menu
instead of a baton caught her eye
at once. From West Georgia she
is going to the University of Geor
gia and from there to Cornell for
her Masters. Her main reason is
so that she wont have to change
Alma Mater tune. (We told you
that she was getting the true
southern spirit).
She started six years ago learn
ing how to play a flute and is still
striving away. She likes all music
wdth swing included. She knits
and enjoys studying faces. (She
must be dreaming of someone).
Her pet hate is people who pop
their knuckles. Miss Jenkins is
her favorite teacher —with the sub
ject she teaches having something
to do with it. (Still more boot
licking).
She enjoys nursing and helps
Miss Ward in that capacity in
the old dormitory. A familiar
object is Arlene with a theromome
ter in one hand and a box of salts
in the other. The title “Mama”
has been given her by the stu
dents and one that Arlene wishes
they could have omitted.

As the Freshman Dance at the

Vice-president Herndon said, “I

each and everyone’s confidence.”
When finally contacted Miss
Gibson was in a light mood, so she
gave a rather humorous answ et.
She said, “As Secretary-Treasurer,
I am for more picture shows and
