WOODFIN COI/K, Business Manager of West Georgian
Woodfin Cole, the Trlon Flawh,
was only returning home when he
came down out of the North Geor
gia mountains to attend school
at West Georgia. He was horn
In this humble city not so very
many years ago and spent the first
nine years of his life here.
From Carrollton he moved to
Coral Gables, Florida, the fair
state that has seen the interned!-
ary years of quite a few of our
campus bigwigs. Woodfin says
(in his own quaint way) that “thar
came a wind down thae thet was
a whopper. It blowed the roofs
off, the windows in, and then
blowed the oranges and grape
fruit all over Florida and half
of the Gulf of Mexico.” (Personal
ly we think that it must have
scared Woodfin badly for it cer
tainly stupted his growth and
caused him to become such a
puny little infant.)
However the wind quite and.
incidentally, so did the boom
which had brought father Cole
down to the fair state. So our
hero’s family moved back to Geor
gia where the banks have little
capital, but where they don’t go
broke so frequently. Trion was
the place of refuge and they've
been there ever since.
In high school at Trion our
Woodfin was quite an athlete. He
starred on the gridion as manager
of the football team. When he
wasn't making thrilling dashes
with the water bucket, he was
also doing a bit of starring on the

In Annual Dinner
On Tuesday evening, November
23, the dormitory students held
their annual Thanksgiving Ban
quet in the dining hall at 6 P.M.
The menu for the occasion con
sisted of: roast turkey, cranberry
sauce, string beans, dressing,
gravy, celery, pickles, hot butter
ed rolls, coffee. Tomato aspic was
served for the salad course. The
desert was mince meat pie. On
each table was a bowl of assorted
fruit.
After the meal was finished, the
students sang several songs and
rounds. Cheers were given for
the faculty, the dietitian, the
waitresses, and the cooks.
Dean Gunn presented several
officers of the student organization
who made short comments. Those
introduced were: Dick Grace, presi
dent of the Student Body; Jeff
Slade, president of the Sophomore
Class; Tom Herndon, Vice-Presi
dent of the Freshman Class; Hor
ton Greene, editor of the West
Georgian; Arlene Phillips, editor
of the Chieftian; and Dorothy
Watson, president of the Women’s
Council.
This occasion is now being anti
cipated by the Freshmen for next
year. At 7:00 P. M. the students
were dismissed so that they might
hear Gilbert Maxwell review some
of his poetry.

THE WEST GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1937
basketball floor for he was also
manager of the basketball team
(Quite a versatile lad). Since he
has been on the West Georgia
campus he lias continued the good
work, having been manager of the
basketball team here. (How lie
spared the time from the balcony,
we don’t know).
Since he has been going the
rounds he says he has hit rock
bottom twice in the way of Dan
Cupid, but evidently what he
thought was rock turned out to
be sand for he seems to be,free
lancing it at the present writing.
And along this line it would be
well to give his pet hate a girl
who says one thing and means
another. (He’s had enough ex
perience with the fairer sex to
know).
He’s no Dean’s List man (pro
bably a 4-F man), but he did make
the ”W” Club, the West Georgian,
and the Chieftain staffs, and be
came a basketball manager.
One of his pertinent thoughts
was "looks like Taylor is getting
left out in the cold.” He likes
Strozier as a teacher with Hart
and Bonner as close seconds. He
likes to eat anywhere and any
time except in the dining hall.
He likes to have fun there and
eat elsewhere. (Attention, Miss
Burkhalter.)
In conclusion, though, we would
like to have you remember his
portrait in the annual last year.
And so we leave you.

The Student Body enjoyed a
dance in the College Gymnasium
on Saturday, November 20. Mack
Thomas and his eight-piece band
from Cartersville rendered the
music. Local talent was inter
mingled in solos by Dorothy Cau
sey, Aaron Buckelew, and a tap
dance by Jeanne Smith.
The dance was sponsored by the
girls of the New Dormitory. Har
vest motiff was carried out, corn
stalks and pumpkins were attrac
tively arranged in the Gymnasium
and yellow and orange streamers
colored the lights.
Despite the cold weather, those
present had a most enjoyable time.
The entire dancing contingent
took part in the "Big Apple” which
was held between the third and
fourth no-breaks.
Among the alumni present were:
Barbara Justice, Trion, Georgia;
Virgil Barrett, Calhoun; J. G.
Robertson, Robert Knox and El
bert Hendricks of Emory; Weems

Sponsor Club Nite
Zeta Sigma Pi is planning a
“Club Nite” to be held during the
winter quarter. Each society will
be given a designated time and
each may dispose of it as they
see fit. President Gladd has al
ready requested that the various
clubs begin at once to make their
plans.
The next meeting will be held
December 9. Plans have not been
completed, but the Program Com
mittee stated that there will be
an important speaker at the Little
Forum.
The Club’s picture was made
just before the holidays for the
“Blue and Gold,” the National
Zeta Sigma Magazine, which will
be published in February.
