•Bout tlu* coming of Emmie,
From Gore to here.
On October 17, Isis, Emmie Bak
er was horn in the thriving metro
polis of Gore, Georgia. That in
just six miles from Summerville,
which is just four miles from
Trion, which is Just 40 miles from
Chattanooga. In high school she
was salutatorian of her graduating
class, missing the valedictorian
position by twenty-three one-hun
dredths of a point.
Emmie has a sister, Marion, who
graduated from West Georgia in
'3(l, which might have been the rea
son Emmie followed up. She de

at the same time decided that her
vocation should be in the field of
home economics. She doesn t
know exactly when her interests
in Home Ec. started, but thinks
that it was just “born in her.” Em
mie intends to go on to the Univer
sity of Georgia for her degree and
then become a “truly good teach
er.”
Emmie’s pet hates are making
talks in chapel and, next in line,
is aching feet Her pet likes are
hot dogs from the Green Front and
teachers that will pick you up
when trudging to or from town.
“Yes, Mam, I like swing music,”
she answered. Benny Goodman
rates first in Emmie’s estimation
with Glenn Gray in on a close
second with his smooth arrange
ment of “Smoko Rings.” She real
ly likes most any kind of music
with the exception of the “Moun
tain Williams.” She tried tc lis
ten each Saturday afternoon dur
ing the winter to the Metropolitan
presentation over WSB.
Emmie’s red hair has just about
become a tradition around West
Georgia. Her hair nicknames
range from “Red” to “Butch" and
she doesn’t seem to lack male ad
mirers who would like to call her
many other and nicer things. How
ever, once in a while, one can hear
her spoken of as “that red head!
by some girls who, it would seem,
mean to imply something uncom
plimentary, but still Emmie’s po
pularity lasts and the girl soon
get over her loss of the boy friend.
Her favorite teachers are Miss
Jenkins, Mr. Hart, and Mr. Stroz
ier because of their methods of
teaching, their understanding, and
their tact.
Emmie is President of the Alpha
Psi, vice-president of the 4-H Club,
treasurer of the New Dormitory,
member of the Chieftian staff,
Voluntary Religious Association,
and Officers Club.

Debates And Ororatory Featured On Five Day
Program Of Southern Association Of Speech
West Georgia’s Debating Club had
representatives among speech stud
ents from twenty colleges in south
eastern states who “talked up a
storm” this week at sessions of
the Southern Asociation of Speech,
which held a five-day conference
in Atlanta.
Deligates from West Georgia
were C. D. Baily, Tom Luck, Horton
Green and Tom Herndon. They
were represented in debates and
oratory contest. Approximately 100
students and their teachers re
gistered for the conference, most
of the number being students en
tered in the tests.
The second phase of the con
ference was held last evening in the

Spring ...
Last Quarter Fever
Overcoming Students
Spring is here to sway,
And we are back to stay.
Back from the spring holidays, it
is harder than ever to settle down
to eight o’clock classes, grits, and
holding hands on the campus. Six.
days were given to us in hopes
that we would get out of our sys
tem the customary spring fever
and lack of energy for the proper
things. Now is still the question
“To be or not to be.” We shall
find out if the holidays did the
good hoped for or the harm ex
pected.
Looking around we find that
spring has sprung forth with some
new characteristics in the stu
dents. Dreamy looks in the eyes
of many who keep thinking of
ones that were left behind them;
headaches by a few that were con
tracted by What I do not know;
lonesome students whose little
something or other did not come
back this quarter; and worst of
all worries and excuses for those
funny little “D’s” and “F’s” figur
ed up by the faculty during their
holidays.
One precaution was taken by the
higher authorities to eliminate the
usual slump of class attendance
due to another or more important
