As Sixty Receive Diplomas
The fifth commencement exercises of West Georgia
College were held this morning, Friday, June 10, at 10
o’clock in the Carrollton city auditorium with Chancellor
S. V Sanford of the University System of Georgia deliver
ing the baccalaureate address. Dean W. G. Gunn present
ed the sophomores to President I. S. Ingram who confered
certificates on the sixty graduates.
The processional, “The Heavens
\sound,” by Beethoven, was ren
tered by the college Glee Clubs,
tegent Marvin Twiggs delivered
the invocation. “Thanks Be to
God,” by Dickson, rendered by
the Woman’s Glee Club. The speak
er of the day was introduced by
President I. S. Ingram. Head Mar
shal at the final exercises was Tho
mas Luck, Jr. Marshals were Myric
Nutt, Virginia Mott, Aaron Bucka
lew and Jeff Slade.

The West Georgian
Downs Receives
Rosenwald Award
Announcement has just been
made that Miss Katie Downs, sup
ervisor of the West Georgia Col
lege practice schools, has receiv
ed a schlorship to Columbia Uni
versity. The schlorship is one
which is awarded annually to a
meal faculty member.
President I. S. Ingram has ap
proved Miss Downs’ leave of ab
sence and she will procede. with
work on her doctors degree this
fall.
Miss Downs will be at West Geor
gia College for the forthcoming
summer session and expects to
return for the fall quarter.

Aids Building Program
In celebrating its fifth anniver
sary, West Georgia College is view
ing in retrospect its progress, dur
ing the period of its existence,
under the able leadership of I. S.
Ingram and a capable faculty.
During the five years West Geor
gia College has grown from two
hundred and thirty-two students to
three hundred and fifty-three this
spring. During this time the per
sonnel of the faculty has almost
doubled.
Two national funds have become
interested in the college during
the past years. The Carnegie Foun
dation has donated several thou
sand dollars to the library, and the
Rosenwald Fund has awarded the
college two projects and several
faculty scholarships.
In its third year West Georgia
College was accredited by the
Southern Association of Colleges.
This completed the finar recogni
tion of its place academically.
Chancellor Sanford has co-oper
ated with the college in a great
building program. Three new
buildings have been added to the
campus, and plans are made for a
fourth. Chancellor Sanford hfes
been responsible for a building
program for the entire University
System to house adequately the
numerous students who have been
attrac ed to the University and its
branches since the reorganization
of 1933.

tem, shown above as he delivered a radio address recently,
spoke this morning, Friday June 10, in Carrollton City
Hall at the fifth annual commencement exercises of West
Georgia College. The commencement exercises this year
mark the fifth anniversary of West Georgia College as a
branch of the University System.
Alpha Psi Reviews
Events Of Year
Alpha Psi held its first meeting
of the year on September 28 when
plans were made for the inita
tion of Freshmen girls who are
majoring in home economics.
Ninteen members were brought
over from last year and the offi
cers are Emmie Baker, president;
Arlene Phillips, vice-president;
Neile Lane, treasurer, Doris Ow
ings, secretary, and Miss Jenkins
faculty advisor.
In one ‘Fell Swoop’ Psi
trippled its size on Octorber 12
when thirty-seven students were
initiated.
Plans were made at the meet
ing for the Hobby Exhibit, the
Maypole Dance and the Fashion'
Show.
The second annual Hobby Show
was held Tuesday afternoon,
February 15, in the home econo
mice labratory. The center of in
terest was the Hit Parade of Heart
Throbs, which was the hobby of
two West Georgia College girls
Every hobby that the busy mind
of man could devise was exhibited
in the Show.
Alpha Psi did away with the
needs for Bull Sessions and Hen
Huddles when its members de
cided what girls and boys like and
dislike 1 - in one another. Henceforth,
the members state, all you have

Studies In Georgia History
Ready For Publication
“Studies in History,” edited by
L. E. Roberts and J. C. Bonner of
the West Georgia College social
science department, is ready to
go to press.
Material for eleven chapters of
the 250 page book of Georgia is
already in the hand of the publish
ers, The University of North Carol
ina Press. Publication is pending
until adequate orders are placed
for the volumn to sell at $2.00 per
copy.
Students and Alumni who desire
to order a copy before publication
should see Professor Roberts or
Bonner and have them place the
order. The pre-publication price
is payable upon delivery of the
book. The last reports indicated
that it would be ready in the early
fall.

Holds Reunion
More than fifty people, includ
ing wives, husbands and children
of the 1918 graduating class of the
Carrollton A & M School, togather
with former faculty members, held
a “twenty-year-after” reunion on
this campus Sunday, June 5.
Members of the class inspected
the campus and buildings, Talks
and reminiscenses were the fea
tures of the program.

First Alumni
Association Formed
Here Yesterday
A vast number of the 1800 quali
fied as alumni of West Georgia
met here yesterday, Thursday
June 9. and formed the first Alum
ni Association of West Georgia.
This movement was fostered by
the officers of the Seventh District
Association and Miss Downs,
local faculty sponsor.
Officers were elected at this in
itial meeting and plans formulat
ed for the complete organization
of a statewide association.
The Seventh District officers re
sponsible for this inaugarative ses
sion are: Virgil Barrett, president;
J tuth Goswick, vice-president*; and
Florence Crawford, secretary.
Various entertainment was af
forded the group during their stay
on the West Georgia campus. A
reception was held in their honor
at the New Girls Dormitory and
then the group attended the gala
Fi eshmen-Faculty dance.
Although there was not a dense
attendance from the number quali
fied as alumni, many letters were
received by Miss Downs which ex
pressed the wholesale interest in
the formation of the association.
HAWKINS WINS
SCHLORSHIP
TO EMORY
Aubrey Hawkins, West Georgia
College sophomore was among
the five outstanding junior college
students awarded schlorships to
Emory University by the Rotary
Foundation.
This is the second year that
scholarships have been offered.
Glenn Hogan, Jr., who graduated
from West Georgia last spring, was
also awarded one of the schlor
shlps. These schlorships are under
the sponsorship of the Institution
of Citizenship and have the better
ment in general government con
ditions in Georgia as their pur
pose.
The schlorships were awarded
to the winners of a competitive
examination conducted by Atlanta
educational and civic affairs and
provide for a year’s study in the
Public Affairs Department of
Emory University under the direc
tion of Dr. Cullen B. Gosnell.
