After a series of eliminations
following the recent tryouts, the
membership committee of the De

posed of the officers of the club.
Those admitted were: Hubert
Aultman, Ava Jean Cornelison,
Ivanelle Burke, Fred Elder, Helen
Watson, Nina Wiley, Forrest
Champion, Jr., Mather Hyatt,
Frank Lambert, Martha Gibson,
Glenn Waldrop, Billy Denton, Hu
bert Hayes, Watson Fuller, Otis

There will be additional try
outs in the future if there are
enough students interested, ac
cording to President Tom Luck.
He also stated that there will be
a special call meeting of the club
sometime in the near future.
At the last meeting the constitu
tion was revised and several new
regulations were added. Corres
pondence with various colleges
over the state was begun in order
to secure appointments for de
bates. Prospects for a trip to the
Debating Tourney at Baton Rouge
were also discussed at this meet
ing.
President Luck confides that
his intentions this year are to
make the greatest success for
the Debating Club that it has ever
known.
A “no game” was ruled in the
University Q f liiinois-University of
Chicago contest in 1894 within 21
minutes of the end of the game
because Illinois substituted its
coach for a regular player.

By Local Club
The September, 1938, issue of
Phi Rho Pi Persuader contains
some very interesting articles con
cerning all members of this na
tional forensic fraternity. Chief
among these articles is the an
nouncement of the subject chosen
for the National debate in Phi
Rho Pi meets. This subject is of
vital importance as it is strictly
American. It is, “Resolved, that
the United States should cease
to use public funds for the pur
pose of stimulating business.”
Each chapter paying their assess
ment by October 15 will receive
a bibliography on this subject.
There are also some new chang
es to the National Constitution
which greatly concern everyone
affiliated with Phi Rho Pi. These
changes are being discussed by
each individual chapter and re
ports mailed to the National Chap
ter head. Also a copy of each
issue of the West Georgian will
be mailed to National Headquar
ters this year.
