this time was almost inevitable.
Mr. Davies also told of the pitiful
situations resulting from the great
exodus of Jews from Germany
ordered by Adolph Hitler.
At the chapel hour Thursday,
September 10, Dr. George Raffolo
vitch spoke to the student body
about the existing crisis in Europe
for the past few weeks, giving
the viewpoint of the European.
Dr. Raffolovitch is a graduate
of the University of Prague, where
lie received his doctor’s degree. He
first came to this country as a
representative of the Rosenwald
Fund.
Dr. Raffolovitch said that the
present aggression of the people
in Germany under Hitler was not
solely for the sake of the German
people living in the Sudeten area
Czechoslovakia, but that the rea
son was the rich mineral deposits
found in the mountains along the
border. He described these moun
tains as beautiful scenery extend
ing about six hundred miles be
tween the two countries.
According to Dr. Raffolovitch
there are approximately six and
one-half million Czechs, three and
ofie-half million Germans, five
hundred thousand Poles, two mil
lion Slovaks, and one million Hun
garians in the Sudeten area.
He described the Czechs as be

Greek Orthodox church. Dr. Raf

the people apart.
In October, 1918, the govern
ment of Czechoslovakia was re
cognized by the powers of the
world war after conferences held
at Geneva, Switzerland.
Asa result of the recent four
power conference held at Munich,
Germany, the II Duce of Italy
climbed to heights unequalled by
the outcome of the gathering as
he was almost solely responsible
for its occurence. With the aid
of the 11 Duce, the world was pro
bably kept out of war by arbitrary
means. Although in the light of
his more or less peaceful attitude,
II Duce would most likely com
bine forces with Hitler if war
becomes a reality again, that is,
in the near future. Dr. Raffolo
vitch also said that the efforts
of the president of the United
States is likewise worthy of un
limited praise in that he sent
notes not only to Hitler, but to
the II Duce suggesting that the
disturbance be settled by more
peaceful means.
In conclusion Dr. Raffolovitch
stated that in all probability that

Russia and Japan is settled, that
