Basketball Team
Once Called
‘Hillbillies,’ ‘Goats’
Today the varsity athletic teams
of West Georgia College are called
the Braves. Few students ever
know the origin of this frequently
heard term.
In 1933 the first varsity athletic
team to play under the auspicies of
West Georgia College started the
season with Professor J. C. Bon
ner as coach. The team had no
name, as that was the first year
of the college. Naturally Coach
Bonner and the administration
wanted a permanent name for the
athletic team of West Georgia.
Accordingly, an election was held
and various names were submit
ted to the student body. At first
“Hill Billies” was decided upon.
Later the team was called the
“West Georgia Goats.” Then the
name, “Braves was selected after
it was suggested by President In
gram because of the rich Indian
tradition and lore connected with
the college.

History Given
(Continued from Page One)
the Braves were a good team for
they amassed a total of Gl3 points
against 522 for their opponents.
Coach Braswell was a fine coach
and produced a good team, but
not as good as the team of 1933.
Serious practice started right after
Thanksgiving and because of the
change of rules the team was held
back.
The following year 1935, Mr.
Bonner again took over the coach
ing position. Practice started
early and a good team was pro
duced. The Braves’ first victory
was against Gordon Presbyterion
Sunday School of Atlanta by a
score of 35-33. Also in that year
the Braves attended their first
North Georgia Junior College
Tournament at Young Harris Col
lege. The season wasn’t so bal
after all, considering the fact that
the Braves won 14 games and
lost 8.
Beginning the fourth year in
basketball at West Georgia Col
lege an old issue of the paper stat
es this, “a large number of stu
dents are expected to attend the
opening of the basketball season
this year. Coach J. C. Bonner
has scheduled an intramural tour
nament which will begin at an
early date, and reports state that
he expects to have at least seven
teams from which to choose the
varsity team.” This team should
be placed on the Honor list be
cause it was in this year that West
Georgia Braves defeated the var
sity of Dahlonega.
When the 1937-38 team opened
we found that the Braves were
coached by a former coach of their
rival school, Reinhardt, Mr. Rhea
Taylor. Mr. Taylor started the
boys out to practice early. The
team lost to Young Harris and
Dahlonega that year, but other
wise they had a good season.
Mr. Taylor was re-elected last
year as Physical Education Direc
tor of West Georgia College for
1938-39. He is again starting the
Braves off with a bang. The play
ers look good and experienced
men are found in abundance but
only a season of hard campaigning
can determine their worth.

The Faculty
i Reorganization was the keynote
of the Officer’s Club meeting held
Thursday evening, November 17.
At this session steps were taken
by the club officers, who were
elected early in the meeting, to
raise the club out of its hereto
fore passive stage to one of in
fluence and power on the campus,
their contention being that the fact
that the club members were chos
en from the leaders of the various
other college activities should, in
itself, call for a powerful official’s
organization.
The officers elected are: Aaron

Other business enacted at this

I wish to express my sincere
