Glee Club Personnel Named
Monday; Watson Directing
The preliminary tryouts for the West Georgia Men’s
Glee Club were held Wednesday night, September 27th.
in the Rural Arts building. There were more than 30 old
and new members present at this meeting.
Prospects seem bright for the
most successful year the Glee Club
has ever had. This organization has
always received the most enthusias
tic cooperation of both the students
and the town people and this year
they expect to merit all the praise
they receive.
The twenty-two prospective new
members who turned out for prac
tice last Wednesday night are as
follows: Bill Alexander, Mack Stin
son, Hollis Worthan, James Hudson.
Will Hurston, Ellis Mitchell, Jack
Collum, Raymond Muggridge, R. M.
Stephens, Ben Halstens, Kendrick
Hudson, Milton Pitts, John Cooper,
Charles Pike, Connie Rowe, Roy
Green, George Bowdoin, Herschel
Williamson’ Reuben Ward, Mehl
Renner, J. L. Chandler, and Arnold
Loftin.
The old members who are back
are: Ist Tenor, Gay Rowe; 2nd
Tenor, Owen Moore, Forrest Cham
pion, and Billy Denton; Ist Base,
Mack Weaver, Lewis Higgins, Eu
gene Hubbard, and Paul Hurt; 2nd
base, Arnold Stark and William
Mitchell.
The officers of the West Georgia
Men’s Glee Club for the year are:
President, Owen Moore; Vice Presi
dent, Lewis Higgins; Secretary and
Treasurer, Arnold Stark; Librarian,
Mack Weaver; Business Manager,
Tony Bryant. The office of Busi
ness Manager is anew office, hav
ing been put into effect this year
for the first time.
Mr. Gordon Watson, director of
the Glee Club, announced that
quartet tryouts would be held in
two or three weeks. He also stated
that there would be a Christmas
program at the end of this quarter.
He expects to be able to present
this program in several nearby
towns also.
The old members of the Glee
Cflib met for the first time this
year Monday night for their try
outs. Some few changes were made
at this meeting which should prove
beneficial to the' Club.
Of Capital University’s 1955 edu
cation graduates, 72 per cent have
been placed in teaching positions.

Reception Sunday
In order that the student might
become better aejuainted with the
faculty, Carrollton ministers and
officials, the Voluntary Religious
Association entertained at a recep
tion in the Gym Sunday afternoon
from 6:00 to 7:30.
Receiving with President and
Mrs I. S. Ingram, were Miss Sara
Ward, Dean of Women; Mr. Rhea
Taylor, Edgar Padgett, president of
V. D. A.; Helen Drummond, vice
president; Rebecca Manning, sec
retary and treasurer; Jane Thomp
son, Tony Bryant ,Mary Gardner,
all V. R. A. council members.
Groups of the faculty were plac
ed in various sections of the gym
in order that sophomores might
nitroduce freshmen to them. The
ministers of Carrollton were in an
other group.
Assisting in entertaining were
members of the Officers Club in
cluding Ann Appleby, June Culver,
Martha K. Perry, Violet Poland,
Mildred Morris, Jessie Woodard,
Christine Johnson, Nell Parrish,
Catherine Adams, Emily Shell, Nina
Wiley, Hilma Traylor, Virginia Bur
dette, Susie Ruth Ramsey, Lunnie
Parker, Lois Yancey and others.
Each sophomore brought two or
thtree freshmen and introduced
them to the faculty and other per
sins with whim they were not ac
quainted.
Preceding the reception, V. R. A.
held its’ Sunday afternoon vespers
in the auditorium of the Academic
building. Jane Thompson presided
and Helen Drummond talked about
the “The Aims and Purposes of
the Voluntary Religious Associa
tion.” She brought to the atten
tion of the students that every stu
dent is a member of the V. R. A.

PLANS ACTIVITIES

The Dramatic Club is to begin
'its activities for the year in the
near future, according to reports
from Christine Johnson, president
of the organization for the 1939-40
college year.
Tryouts for the presentations in
the fall quarter are scheduled to be
held as soon as college classes be
come more settled.
Plans are being formulated for
the production of several one-act
plays in addition to one three-act
play.
Other officers of the group are;
Forrest Champion, vice president
and June Culver, secretary. Miss
Mary Eliason will serve the club as
faculty adviser.

were hosts at the first student body
social of the year in the new gym
nasium Saturday night, Sept. 30.
At this informal social the guests
were entertained with dancing and
games which included contests
staged by groups of students in
which scenes from some play or
nursery rhyme were enacted.
